Can you take a diuretic with Sulfa allergy?

Does anyone know if there's a diuretic you can take it you're allergic to Sulfa? I've tried about every drug class (except beta blockers) and have had problems with them. I am wondering if a diuretic might be the way to go, but never tried it because I have a sulfa allergy.

Also, I know you have to be monitored when you are on a diuretic for potassium levels, etc. Can someone please explain what/how often you need to be monitored for this, and what the risks of being on a diuretic are?

Thanks!
Sonia

Re: Can you take a diuretic with Sulfa allergy?

good morning---I have taken a diuretic called Maxide for about 12 years, It was originaly prescribed for adema in my hands. about 4 years ago I had a really high BP spike and the dr, put me on Catapres (clonidine) for the BP. I am also allergic to sulfa drugs and neither of these have bothered me. Best of luck

Re: Can you take a diuretic with Sulfa allergy?

I have sulfa allergies and took a diuretic for almost a year without any allergic problem. I eventually quit the diuretic because it dried out my skin too much.
