Question Hypertension After Hip Replacement Surgery

I had by right hip replaced at the end of April. I have always had low blood pressure (about 100/70). When I came home from in-patient rehab, my blood pressure was about 125/70. The nurse said she thought it was due to the pain I was in. I just had a physical 2 weeks ago (about the middle of September) and my blood pressure was 140/80!! I've never had it that high. I still have some pain from muscle soreness when I walk - no pain when I am sitting or laying down. I have gained about 10 pounds from after the surgery, but that shouldn't have increased it that much. I was taking advil 4 or 5 times a day and had been for several months. Could this be causing the increase? I've pretty much stopped taking anything but may take a couple of advil or tylenol once a day - but some days I'm not taking anything. I went to a pharmacy and took my blood pressure several days ago and it was still 137/83 so it doesn't seem that stopping advil has helped. Any suggestions?

Re: Hypertension After Hip Replacement Surgery

Hi,

I wouldn't rely on those machines at the Pharmacy. When my b/p was well over 200, I got a terrific reading at Krogers 120/70-if only that had been accurate . You really should buy a reliable b/p monitor. In the meantime you can go to the ER or a Fire Station to get a quick reading for free. Your b/p isn't terribly high but it is the increase that I know worries you. Oh, and it takes awhile to get these meds out of our system because the body stores some in the fat tissue which is slowly released. Dr. Dean says even losing five or ten lbs can decrease one's pressure. Fam
