numb fingers

I have extremely high blood pressure and pulse problems. Last week I was sick and the only thing that tasted good was ice water so I drank about 2 gallons in a day. I woke up that night and I was so swollen especially legs and feet looked like ballons. And then my fingers all went numb. I don't want to bother my doctor if it is just minor. And yes I am on 3 different meds. Thanks in advance, Dyana

Re: numb fingers

Definately see your doctor. I had edema (swelling) in my legs and my doctor said that's usually a sign something else is going on. If one of your meds is a diauretic, I would make an appointment because maybe the drug may not be working as intended. Your doctor should be able to figure out what the issue is, if it's even an issue.

Re: numb fingers

Dyana,

As suggested by the other posters, you should see your doctor. He will be happy to see you (they don't work for free ) and, hopefully, help you. He might not do anything rightaway. On the other hand, he might send you for some tests.
There are many possible causes for numbness and tingling in the limbs. Some medications can also have this effect. It took months of weekly complaints about my constantly tingling and sometimes numb arm for my doctor to refer me to a neurologist. He justified this long wait by saying that often these things come & go and resolve on their own. This is why he had let months pass without making the referral. You could have a damaged nerve in your elbow, which, I am told, is very common.

What I know is that Calcium Channel Blockers can cause swelling, that is why they give diuretic along with it. What High BP Meds you are on?

Re: numb fingers

Dy,

You could kill yourself drinking 2 gallons of water in a day!!! Do you realize that you could have developed seizures or "water on the brain?"

Do you realize that amount of water especially if drunk in a short amount of time could raise your b/p?

You probably got the numbness from all the electrolytes (like sodium. potassium, calcium etc.) you were losing in your urine. Plus the probability that you had swelling from the increased fluid that is similar to a carpel tunnel syndrome that happens at times.

You need to go to the ER if you feel that way again.

The most you should drink unless you are a huge woman is probably 12 glasses of fluid a day if you are on a diuretic. I saw a program on Discovery involving competitive eating where Dr's were performing an experiment with water drinking where they discussed the worst case scenarios of excess water drinking.

A radio station once had a contest to see who could drink the most water or fluid. One woman died as a result!!!
