You didn't say how high your blood pressure is, but before starting an exercise program, check with your doctor. If your blood pressure is significantly high, you may need medication, even if only short-term, to keep it down while you start an exercise program. Exercising with blood pressure that is significantly high (uncontrolled by medication) could be dangerous.
If your blood pressure is only borderline high, exercise may very well help in bringing it down.
