Black cohosh interaction with BP meds? - High & Low Blood Pressure Message Board

I have heard that certain herbs containing cardiac glycosides, (smooth muscle relaxants) may create excessively low blood pressure in people taking high blood pressure meds.

Is black cohosh (for menopausal symptoms) one of them?

I have read that when you have high blood pressure you should not take black cohosh or drink green tea.

Hi Molly- Thanks for your reply..... I have too, but don't know where. I'm hoping for some science based info...do you know where you heard about it and from what source?

Hi- Seems like black cohosh MAY present some problems when used with antihypertensives.

I used my search engine for "antihypertensives" "black cohosh" (typed exactly like that) and found a huge array of info.
Seems that Black cohosh may oppose OR enhance the effect of antihypertensive medications.

Apparently it has hypotensive properties, so when taken with BP meds, it can lower BP too much. When taken with diuretics apparently it can cause difficulty with diuresis and hypertension may result.

I'm going to talk to my doctors before I touch it!
