My bp is 228 over 118!! Shouldn't I be dead???

I've never had blood pressure higher than 140 over 90. Usually it's 130/80.

Kattie,

I am glad that you are very much alive.

Are you being treated for HBP? Was there an event that precipitated this episode. Did you go to the ER? What were your symptoms when your B/P was that high?

Again, glad that you are ok.

Vanessa

Re: My bp is 228 over 118!! Shouldn't I be dead???

I had a horrendous infection in my jaw that got into my bloodstrean before Christmas. Before that I had normal blood pressure.

I just started Prinivil today. Hope it works.

Thank you. I'm a bit worried because the pharmacist said it would probably take 2-4 weeks for the medicine to kick in.

Re: My bp is 228 over 118!! Shouldn't I be dead???

Hi Kattie,

With a b/p of 228/118 it seems you should not have to wait for possibly 4 wks for it to work. My b/p was at the level & my Dr. gave me Clonidine & labetalol which act faster. I would avoid taking clonidine because it is hard to get off of it without withdrawal symptoms.

Lebatalol would get the diastolic (2nd number) down right away which would reduce your risk of stroke etc. It is hard on the liver so I would not drink alcohol while on this drug. In very rare cases, the liver can be damaged severly. As you will find out, most of these b/p meds carry risks. Lebatalol does make one tired for the first 2 or 3 hrs after taking it.

Did the Dr. tell you that you should avoid taking in extra potassium while taking Prinivil?
The salt substitutes often have extra potassium.

When I had a tooth absess, my b/p dropped to 90/48 & I had to cut my meds in half.

Don't be surprised if your b/p returns to normal once the jaw is healed. Fam

Re: My bp is 228 over 118!! Shouldn't I be dead???

I had a huge kidney stone a month ago and where I was in so much pain my blood pressure shot up high too. It was 198/114 er said it was so high because I was in so much pain and that my kidney was infected because of the stone. I had to have emergancy surgery done to bust it up, blood pressure stayed up until I passed the stone. I take micardis 80 mg. for my blood pressure, I caught a cold from my daughter and it shot my bp up too. It seems like anything can make it go up.
