Smile What painkillers can i take with Losartan?

I am 32 and have been diagnosed with an enlarged heart caused by high blood pressure and have been prescribed Losartan/50mg for the foreseeable future.

My GP told me i cannot take Ibuprofen or nurofen etc while i am on Losartan.

Unfortunately i have a re-occuring back injury and rely on these to help my back.

My GP has told me to use paracetamol but these are rarely strong enough to help with pain when my back "goes".

Does anybody know of a strong painkiller i can use alongside Losartan to help my back?..

All advice greatfully recieved.

Thanks..

Michael

Re: What painkillers can i take with Losartan?

Hi Chippet,

I am on multiple medications and I have been given Tylenol 3s and Tylenol 2s to take as needed. I would hope that they do not interact with any of my meds. They work very well for muscle aches and pains. I was given a muscle relaxant in the past, which should never have been prescribed. Now I always check for drug interactions before taking any new medication. I can't remember whether or not I checked the Tylenol for interactions with my other meds. I think I did.

Good luck with your treatment. As I am sure you were told, keeping the blood pressure well controlled is of utmost importance. It speeds up the recovery and helps prevent further damage. How is your medication working? Is your current dose adequate?

Hey Flowergirl.
Thanks very much for your advice. Is Tylenol available in the UK?... I've not heard of it before.
I started Losartan in January this year(2008) and my BP has dropped from 165/110 to 137/65 within the space of 6 weeks and i don't appear to be suffering from any side effects..
I was a little concerned that the treatment would affect my mountain bike training but i don't think it has.
I hope your medications are working for you??

Hi

You cant actually get tylenol in the UK. You can take Co-Codamol which is 500mg paracetamol with codeine. I think you can only get it on prescription at that dose. The reason you cant take nurofen etc is it stops the BP med from doing its job. I, too, find normal paracetamol does absolutely nothing so i hope you will find that co-codomal will do the job. It can make you a bit sleepy so start of low dose. Hope this helps.

I am so glad your medication is controlling your blood pressure. Is your doctor happy with your current readings? The ARB group of antihypertensive meds is relatively problem free, especially in lower doses. It's good to know you don't have to deal with the side effects. Living an active lifestyle will help with the blood pressure control. You have everything going for you.
My meds are effective in keeping the blood pressure within range, which is the main thing. I am happy with my readings. Thanks for asking!

take care,
flowergirl
