Magnesium - Anyone Know the Real Story?

Yesterday I was reviewing some past posts from this site and ran across several references about magnesium supplementation. Several things made an impression on me, those being:

1. Two different posters said after they started supplementation they felt calmer and more relaxed. As a type A person with HBP who is constantly "wound up" and feels he may suffer constant spikes from this, (bp goes up as much as 25 top and 10 to 15 bottom when I feel wound up vs. when I feel calm.

2. Another poster said that people who enjoy alcohol on a regular basis could be magnesium deficent. I'm certainly not totally overboard with alcohol but to say I'm not a person who enjoys a few cocktails on a regular basis would not be accurate either.

I spent the morning reviewing a number of studies that all spoke of the blood pressure lowering effects of proper amounts of magnesium in the diet. But when I reviewed historical posts on this forum relating to magnesium many people referred to the fact that magnesium will not lower blood pressure? One poster said it did nothing to lower his BP while another said she was doing very well with it (although she provided no begining and ending BP numbers).

Very confused, anyone have further information or have ever tried it?

Re: Magnesium - Anyone Know the Real Story?

Hi,

I have been on Magnesium supplements for the last few years, 250 mg daily. I mainly take it to regulate my heart rate and it was doing a great job, pretty much like a Beta-Blocker but without the side effects, until few weeks ago it stopped working. It didn't had any effects on my Blood Pressure though, but yes some people said that they got a Blood Pressure lowering effect with it.

The only way to tell how it's going to affect you is to give it a try. Also some say that they take 500mg or even more, I have read somewhere that your body needs only 350mg daily (double check on that please because I'm not sure).

By the way, I stopped using Magnesium supplements few days ago but I think I will start it again.
Good luck,
Michael

Re: Magnesium - Anyone Know the Real Story?

hi JR...what i know is magnisuim tablets are good for someone who is suffering from palpatations/ectopics heartbeats sometimes a low magnisuim count can be responsible ...also if your magnisuim levels are normal there is a risk of magnisuim overdoese which is not good news for the heart at all!!!
i have never heard of magnisuim being used to reduce h.b.p ...whatever you use supplements for always best to check with your G.P as some supplements can cause a rise in B.P .....

Re: Magnesium - Anyone Know the Real Story?

I have been taking 250mg of Magnesium daily and it has helped out with controlling my SVTs. Of all people my therapist suggested it after a series of SVTs and panic attacks. It does well for me.
Three vitamins actually help good heart health. Magnesium, Calcium and Potassium. If you do start taking any of these suppliments do speak with your doctor. An imbalance between the two can cause cardiac problems and even heart attack. My doctor checks my levels every six months and has me on a Potassium and Calcium regiment.
Also, Vitamin D and fish oil are other great things that help the heart. Vitamin D comes from sun exposure and always wear sunscreen.

Re: Magnesium - Anyone Know the Real Story?

Hi everyone,

I tried magnesium and it gave me diarrhea. BAD! It was like taking a laxative.

I have tachycardia and was hoping it would help slow my heart rate.
