They vary, some almost immediately, some two to four weeks.

Thanks for your quick answer. I am taking Lisinopril. My blood pressure seems to have gone just over night after taking the first pill. Is this possible with this particular drug? I am hoping my blood pressure was low without it and that I only had a high reading at the doctor's office.

Hi,

That's quite possible. Take regular BP readings for a week or so. I find first thing in the morning the best time before taking coffee and breakfast.

Marantz.

Many BP medications will bring a significant drop in in your readings within hours of taking them. That leads to the process, over time, whereby your Dr. would titrate the dose to meet a desired result.

Perhaps before continuing on a regimen of meds, you might want to get a home monitor and take your BP 3 times a day for a couple of weeks and see if there is any sort of trend.

I would check though, if it's safe to abruptly halt the medication you are presently taking.

Re: How fast does blood pressure medicine work?

ACE inhibitors, which Lisinopril is, do work very fast. And you should be taking your pressure at least once a day for a few weeks to be sure it doesn't get too low. If it stays good and doesn't get too low, the med is probably a good thing. You have to check and monitor yourself on an ongoing basis as everyone on these boards will tell you, our drs. only see us in a snapshot visit and ongoing monitoring is our own responsibility.
