Red face WHY do you have high blood pressure???

I'm asking because my blood pressure went from nice normal numbers all my life to very high numbers literally overnight. Readings like 220 over 112!!!!

It started one evening with a bloody nose; which led me to go to the Dr the following morning (thinking he's going to do something about just the nose) to a life-threatening high blood pressure reading; which led me to the ER; which led me to a cardiology ward for 5 days.

So 3 weeks later; I have taken most salt out of my diet (wasn't big on it anyway); eat tons of fruit; walk as much as I can and I still get readings (like tonight) of 170 over 90!!!! That's taking some bp meds the dr put me on.

I've 5'8 and weigh 160 lbs. I'm in my mid 50s. Heart tests (at the hospital) says heart's ok, cholosteral(sp) is ok.

The Heart doc cannot tell me WHY I (suddenly) have high blood pressure. So what the heck???

So just wondering WHY do you have high blood pressure? What did your doctor tell you?

Re: WHY do you have high blood pressure???

I'm 36yrs old and had a similar situation a couple of yrs ago.I've been on 3meds because eventually the meds have a bad effect on me. For the most part, I've been able to keep the bp under control with no medication. When it starts to go up, I take the meds for a few weeks and get it back down and that seems to last months. All tests and blood work is fine. No family history of hypertension. Most often they don't know why, but conventional medicine doesn't seem to really be geared towards why but how to fix symptoms. I know part of my problem is my own stupid fault: poor diet(i skip a lot of meals), too much soda, smoke, lots of stress. I'm currently in the middle of a crisis right now, ended up in the er last night with 180/130. This time is weird though, if I lay down my b/p comes down, if I sit up or move around it starts to go way up. Can't take my meds because they make me so sick, so seeing the dr tomorrow am. Took a xanex to make it through the night. Don't expect to find out why you have high b/p but I would defintely search into how to control it naturally, it is possible.

Re: WHY do you have high blood pressure???

Hi, I've been well controlled on an ARB and a beta blocker for a number of years, but in the past few months my bp has been going up -- today at the doctor's, it was 180/110. He's added a CCB to my regimen and is ordering two tests to start with: a 24-hr. urine test to check for adrenal overactivity and a renal scan to look for renal stenosis. I've also been taking Lexapro for the past two months for anxiety, which I believe is why the doctor is checking out potential adrenal issues first.

You might suggest that your doctor do some tests such as these to check for potential outlying causes. Best of luck!
