The same as for a 23 year old, according to doctors: 120/80, or increasingly 115/75.

Back in the day, doctors said your systolic should be your age + 100. That's no longer the case apparently.

Re: what is the normal blood pressure level of 43 yr old male

Hi Anthony,

Just to key off on what Tamu posted. As we age, the tendancy is for the systolic, or first higher number, to go up. Apparently this is due to the pipes stiffening and as they become less elastic and more rigid, the pressure rises. Many doctors are not fearful, for example, if a 70 year old woman has a sytolic reading of 160, because it is not the same as a 20 year old having it. My mother for example, though taking meds now, had readings of 200/110 for the longest time before medicating. She is 78 now. When they first gave her meds, she lost sodium and was hospitalized. They changed her med and her pressures dropped to 100/60 and she nearly passed out all the time. Not good when falling means a broken hip. Now, she gets 150/85 with Norvasc, and they aren't too concerned over it.

Regards, Brenden.

Re: what is the normal blood pressure level of 43 yr old male

Hi Stop,

Basically, in order to control isolated systolic hypertension in the elderly, they need to med them up quite a bit. If she takes much more, her pressures will go low enough to cause light-headedness. This plus a osteoperosis equals a broken hip. Far more of a problem than a bit of hypertension. It is one thing for a 20 year old to have 30 years of a 150+ reading; it is quite another for a 78 year old to do so. BTW, I have known many elderly folks with these readings and much higher that have survived well into their 80s. Like the song says, "How long you wanna live, anyway?" ;-)

Regards, Brenden.

Re: what is the normal blood pressure level of 43 yr old male

I just read a great article in a med. journal about the danger of having a low diastolic especially in the elderly. I wish I could keep my systolic lower while increasing my distolic (50-60 usually.) Gives me more motivation to lose weight which should lower my systolic. That would mean I could lower my beta blocker dose which would increase my diastolic. Someone needs to come up with a drug just for the systolic. Fam

Re: what is the normal blood pressure level of 43 yr old male

I hear that fam. Just too bad that it seems impossible to lose any weight on these beta-blockers. I actually think it's the same for trying to gain muscle, cause i been at a stand still with that as well. I'm going to see on Tuesday and try to get off the beat blockers all together and stick with the anxiety meds to stop the spikes and i'll journal what happens. But then again anxiety meds cause weight gain too and... AHHHHH LOL it really is no win is it?

Re: what is the normal blood pressure level of 43 yr old male

I weighed 108 this morning.... but I was at the cardio's office yesterday and my bp was 114/86 my diastolic was high, my cardio said it was fine. This morning and it was 106/74

I asked how I could lower my diastolic and he said he couldnt without making me tired and sick and he said it was fine where it is at. he thinks I obcess over numbers too much.

Your diastolic is perfect. Read my post above. I'll try to post the other parts of the article tonight. In fact, your b/p & weight are perfect!!! Fam

Re: what is the normal blood pressure level of 43 yr old male

I'm going to always be worried now if i ever have to go the hospital again, just from the fact when i was there last time my diastolic hit 115-120 range, JUST from the stress. And thats when they had me monitored, imagine what it gets to when we are just stressed out really bad out somewhere( grocery store, waiting onlines) and not taking it, i could only imagine how high i've hit, lol i don't want to know actually.
