Yet another new medicine for BP.*HELP*

I have been on several BP meds for high Bp. I honestly don't feel as if my BP was high enough to warrant a new medication..but then again I'm not a Dr....This past week has been most stressful on me...My dog passed away....I'm having problems will bills etc....which I'm certain has lead to my new stress level ...point being....I saw a new Dr at my appt...my Dr was not in.....I'm taking Hydrochlorothiazdie 25 mg...plus lisinopril 20 mg. Well with a 140/70 BP reading the DR thought my BP was still high......so now I'm looking at taking coag...I know nothing about this drug except it is a Beta/Alpha blocker ......I'm not excited over stating a new medication.....can anyone please tell me if they have taken this coag...?????? It would help me out.....I really don't like starting new meds....

Thanks

Re: Yet another new medicine for BP.*HELP*

Considering the stress that your under at the moment, I don't think 140/70 is that bad. Stress does cause our BP to rise. Mine rises when I go to the doctor's office I would wait a bit before starting the new meds. Give yourself a chance to get over the death of your dog (that's like losing a family member) and calm down about the bills. It would be wise to invest in a BP monitor for home. Then you can monitor your own BP and get a good average of your numbers. Sometimes doctors are too quick to write prescriptions. It's almost like they have a quota to meet or something Take care!

Re: Yet another new medicine for BP.*HELP*

I think you are referring to a drug called "COREG" an Alpha/Beta blocker. This drug is mainly used and has excellent results for heart failure. This drug is supposedly very potent, and similar to other beta blockers causes fatigue. Usually doctors prescribe Toprol or Atenolol (beta blockers) first. Lately there have been recalls for Metoprolol and Toprol generics and Atenolol is getting negative press. Maybe your doctor feels Coreg is a safer choice. I take a beta blocker called Bystolic, which is the newest and latest beta blocker to be sold in the U.S. Many doctors are prescribing only Bystolic without any other medications because of it's proven efficacy. In my opinion, I believe your blood pressure is not that high to add a 3'rd drug. I am not a doctor but I do believe doctors are too quick to jump and prescribe extra medications which are not always needed. This is a way to extend continuous followup visits. I think just a diuretic is usually enough to keep blood pressure at safe levels and to eliminate excess fluids. If stress or anxiety is noted to be an issue than a beta blocker is a better choice. According to my doctor, Coreg is a drug which is reserved for more severe forms of heart failure. For most others Toprol is the best choice.

Re: Yet another new medicine for BP.*HELP*

nice2nou422;

I haven't taken it, but I am on HCTZ, Lisinopril and Procardia XL (Aka Nifedical).

I am being re-evaled for medical need for three (my blood pressure stays at about 130/90 regardless of what we do) but I would express your concerns to your doctor.

Medical staff don't always know what you think, or whats going on in your life.

If you had something really stressful just happen in your life, tell him. If you feel something is raising your pressure but its not normally that high, tell him.

I personally have no qualms with any BP drug out there, but of course always do your research!

Good luck!
