Blood pressure increase and Prednisone

I've been on Prednisone quite a bit lately because of asthma flares due to polluted air in my area.

I've never had too many side effects from the steroid in the past. This last Saturday and again today, my pulse has gone way up when I'm resting. It has been around 129 resting. I also noticed that my BP is going up at the same time. It has been about 179/77 when these incidents have happened. Up until the last couple weeks, I've had my BP well controlled at about 116/69. I called my doc and he said it was just the steroids, but it does have me concerned. Has anyone else out there had BP and pulse increase issues on steroids? What did you do? Did things go back to normal after you went off the the steroids?

Right now, I really do need the steroids to get my breathing back under control so going off of them really isn't an immediate option.

Thanks for your input.

Re: Blood pressure increase and Prednisone

Yeah, I think that is a common side effect. I think steroids make you hold water and probably sodium and that is probably why. You dont' say if you're on BP meds, but you have to get your asthma under control so maybe your doc can up our BP meds temporarily?

Re: Blood pressure increase and Prednisone

I'm currently taking Dyazide. I went off of my Norvasc (that I had been on for years) about 4 months ago because my BP had been doing so well. I may need to reconsider going back on it.
