high blood pressure and cholesterol

I am 51 years old and my blood pressure has been high recently and cholesterol. I am scared to take prescribed meds with all the side effects. Was given Crestor is there a safer drug than this? Also given Bystolic 5mg for blood pressure. Can the bystolic alone bring down both? Thanks for help anyone. Kathy

Re: high blood pressure and cholesterol

The side effects of the meds listed on the net are unlikely to happen to you - most people take these drugs without side effets. And, you need to remember the side effect of NOT taking them, that is, heart attacks, strokes, heart faliure, kidney failiure etc.

Give the drugs a try, if they do produce side effects your doctor can change them around, but chances are, they wont.

No Kathy - Bystolic only lowers blood pressure. I also take Bystolic. It's very safe at 5mg - 10mg a day. It is also the most tolerable of most of the beta blockers being prescribed. Crestor is the strongest statin currently available. This statin is best for patients with very high or dangerous Cholesterol levels. At a low dose of about 5mg. it can lower cholesterol by about 30 %.

Re: high blood pressure and cholesterol

I can give you a few quick tips for reducing your cholesterol naturally.
- Eat rolled oats every morning for breakfast with fat free high calcium milk. Or with cholesterol reducing milk. Oats are well known to reduce cholesterol.
- Eat less animal fats. This includes red meat/pork, butter/margerine/ghee/oils.
- Take fish oil supplements. This will increase your good cholesterol. If you don't like taking this try flaxseed oil.
- Eat foods with less or no salt.
- Excercise and aim to reduce 5 to 10kg. Aim to do a minimum of 30minutes per day. (Like walking. This is low intensity and will put less pressure on your joints.)
You may need to still take medication in addition to these. But you will find that these small changes will certainly help you. Good luck.
