High Blood Pressure at age 18?

My son is 18 years old, very athletic and in good shape, not overweight eithier. Recently i checked his bp and it was 148/90. Since that i have continued to check and continually get the same reading in the 140's and 90's. this comes even at rest. Heart rate ranges between 60 and 70, he takes no meds for anything. The only thing i can come up with is his drinking of gatorade, needless to say we have eliminated this completely. Is it possible that the daily drinking of gatorade be responsible for this and or what else could be causing it? Thanks in advance for your help....

Re: High Blood Pressure at age 18?

i doubt it - although gatorade does contain some salt, it is not a diuretic as far as i'm aware. does he drink a lot of coffee, soda, caffeine? chances are it's just genetically elevated and might need to be treated. does he drink much alcohol? have panic disorder? probably best to have it checked and evaluated by doc.

This is roughly the age I became hypertensive as well, with similar bp as you mention. Its possible that he has some sort of primary cause - coarctation, renal artery stenosis, etc. A docs eval would be a good idea.

Believe it or not Gatorade has tons of dyes especially red dye 40.
Look up the ingredients in Gatorade and it will horrify you, these dyes and preservatives are causing havoc on our children.
You son maybe having reaction to those dyes. The symptoms come in all forms from ADHD to physical symptoms.
