Lisinopril vs benicar

ok I have been on both. I have to say benicar is the most awful BP med I have been on for the past 4 years. Why was this the only drug ever pushed on me? It's expensive, takes weeks to lower my bp and the side effects are terrible.

I took my first dose of 10mg lisinopril today and I am not at 110/75. The RX only costs me $5 vs the $50 for Benicar.

I had to ask to go on Lisinopril by the way and I have seen 4 different doctors including cardio's. Is Benicar supposed to be better?

Re: Lisinopril vs benicar

See everyone is just so different. Lisinopril made my BP go up to 230/125. I almost had to be intubated-put on a ventilator because it gave me severe angioedema.
Flutterbye is this the lowest that you have been?

Re: Lisinopril vs benicar

well today my bp is running an average of 120/85 but I got a few 115/75. We'll see how well this stuff works for me. I do have a little nausia and when I napped my pulse shot up to 90 upon waking. This is what happened on the benicar. It would lower my pressure but it made my pulse increase to 110 when I woke up in the moring or even after napping. I am afraid this will do the same thing.

I felt on top of the world yesterday thinking this was the greatest drug ever because benicar took 4 weeks to get my pressure down. It would be lower but at the doctors it would be 140/90. I have problems with the diastolic and I just havent felt good and a little breathless. they cant find out why. Oh well... tired of it now.

Re: Lisinopril vs benicar

I took lisinopril for almost two years, and experienced pitting edema of my legs and ankles, occasional severe joint pain, and weight gain along with the usual persistant cough.

Switched to Benicar last week, and I couldn't be more pleased with how well it's working. BP is lower, edema is gone, cough is gone, and I'm losing weight.

Just depends on what works better for you.

Re: Lisinopril vs benicar

I read more positive things about benicar vs lisinopril. I don't know why I had problems with it. Kind of bothers me to honest. I don't know why benicar didn't work as well for me.

Did you say weight gain with lisinopril???? Ok thats one side effect I don't want!! Is that a common side effect????

It did that with me, though it may have been mainly water weight and bloating. I don't think it's a common side effect, but then again peripheral edema isn't listed as a common one either.

Re: Lisinopril vs benicar

Diovan is the most proven of the ARB's, with less side effects. Altace is the Ace Inhibitor with the most proven track record. Keep in mind that Ace Inhibitors are known to cause an increase in Potassium, and with increased use tends to cause Kidney disease. High Potassium levels and kidney disease work hand in hand.

Re: Lisinopril vs benicar

If you have Insurance, you can try an Ace Inhibitor called ACEON, the generic is called PERINDOPRIL. The side effects for me were much less then other ACE's. The best ARB's with the least side effects are DIOVAN and COZAAR. I've been taking BYSTOLIC (a beta blocker) for a few years now and I can say that BYSTOLIC is better than any ACE or ARB I've ever taken. Stomach issues and joint pain are very rare with BYSTOLIC. It also is very good at lowering blood pressure and heart rate. ACE's or ARB's seemed to increase my heart rate and my blood pressure was never completely under control. BEINICAR is the most potent for lowering blood pressure, but side effects can sometimes be a problem.
