Re: Just found out have high blood pressure

Depending on how high it is, or whether the dr. feels he needs meds. right away or will just monitor it for awhile, there are quite a few things he can do to lower it naturally. Sometimes if it has been going on for awhile or is qquite high they will put you on meds. right away. Here is a good search engine place to look up different sites about high BP and other stuff. Maybe he will be lucky and beable to control it with just diet and exercise. Good luck!! <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif"> JJ

watch the sodium intake. My doctor says to keep it down to 2000 mgs per day. Most prepared food are high in sodium. Things like speghetti sauce or packaged meal. There are some good cook books out there by The American Medical Association that helps with the sodium.

A low carbohydrate diet is usually quite successful in lowering bloodpressure. If he starts on bloodpressure medication without making any other changes in his diet or lifestyle, he will likely be on medication for the rest of his life. Does he have any other health concerns like being overweight or having elevated cholesterol or triglycerides? These, including high bloodpressure, are all symptoms of Syndrome X. Syndrome X is closely linked to (more than likely caused by) insulin resistance. And the way to correct insulin resistance is to lower insulin requirements on a low carbohydrate diet.

A good book on the subject of the low carbohydrate diet and the biochemistry behind why it works is "Protein Power" by Drs. Eades. The paperback version only costs $6.00-$7.00 at any bookstore including online.
