Hello everyone! I am new to the list and during the past few weeks have become a bit...concerned. I have been getting readings from a machine I trust, between 155/111 to 187/120....and from what I can tell, this is considered high.
My concern, although I feel fine, during the past few days, my wrists and hands, feet and ankles have really begun to swell. To an uncomfortable point. Is this to be expected with my blood pressure a little elevated?
Those readings are a bit high. Borderline high is 140/90. If you are getting swelling it may be due to retaining fluid. If I were you, I would call your dr. and have it checked out, and maybe be put on a diuretic which will reduce the swelling and maybe bring those numbers down. Good luck. JJ
It is most certainly a high reading...alarming to be exact.
The good thing is that you are aware of it and have time to change it and your habits.
The symptoms of swelling in the joints you mentioned are almost always associated with too much salt.
The first reply by JJ is correct....you have fluid buildup which is almost always attibuted by excess salt intake.
Other factors such as HEIGHT vs WEIGHT can also be considered. If you are overweight for your stature, high blood pressure will be your newest enemy.
Go to the doc IMMEDIATELY, get on medication if recommended (I am sure it will) and cut the salt.
With high blood pressure in folks below 40 years old, if you cut the salt, lose weight and get into an exercise regimen, you might be able to wean off the high blood pressure medicene some day soon.
email me and let me know how you do.
Don is 100% right!! I was just put on BP meds., Altace about 7 months ago due to a sudden rise of 170-175/95-102. It took me about a month to get it down to a good level, but it still kept going up and down like a yo-yo. I recently joined a gym and go 3 to 4 days a week, and now it is staying about 105-122/68-77. I use hardly any salt, can't stand it, not over weight more than 7 lbs., so the exercise is a true MUST!! Dr. said if it keeps staying down like this, she just might try me getting off the meds. to see how I do. Wish you the best of luck, and God Bless!! JJ
