arm position when taking bp

Why don't doctors and nurses have you rest your arm on a flat surface when taking your blood pressure? Mine is always lower when it is taken resting on a support. Usually in the doctor's office, they have you extend your arm towards them. I find myself trying to keep it steady and still, and I am not relaxed like I am at my desk with my arm resting, using my home monitor.

Re: arm position when taking bp

Just a thought but occasionally my doctor checks my bp sitting and then standing and standing usually lowers it after your body stablises after standing it is amazing how much you heart rate and bp rises just doing easy tasks like that so I conclude the less stress on the body the lower the bp but of course exercise is excellent to lower bp that sounds contradictory but what I mean is that when taking bp if your body is extended the lower the bp only a minamal result would be expected anything around 140/90 would be expected to be on the high side the 140 is not so bad it is the 90 that is bad and if it is higher then that is not good

Re: arm position when taking bp

Bloodpressure should be taken according to "protocol", that is, sitting in chair to support your back, legs not crossed, sit for 5 minutes, no talking, arm at heart height. They should hold your arm weight and not you. Some nurses tuck my arm under their arm to help hold up.

Request that your BP be taken according to "protocol". You may get a funny look but that is o.k. go ahead and give them a good laugh and ask when the last time "they" had "their" hearing tested. Many errors are made due to the person taking bloodpressure does not have good hearing.
