A lady I know has 130 over 80 and takes Monopril plus for blood pressure. Without it the BP is 160 over 110. She goes to the doctor every 2 or 3 months to check and only if she feels her pressure is high. She checks her own pressure with an electronic wrist cuff thingy. It takes just a few seconds, and she knows how she is doing. She had to go more often at first or when she changed medication to keep track of how well the medication was working. When whe got down to normal levels, the Doc told her to spread out the visits to 2 or 3 a year. If her pressure goes up and stays up she calls the doctor.

Hope this helps. If your pressure fluctuates and you don't have a way to keep track at home, you may be dancing that last dance. And your doctor feels you need him to monitor you more closely. Or maybe not.
