High potassium diet

I've been reading alot lately about the need for at least 3500 mg of potassium/day and that it can lower blood pressure. If I go on a diet with a concerted effort to get the 3500 mg of potassium/day, does anyone know how long it will take for the effects (if any) to show up in the blood pressure readings? I've read that the most useful potassium comes from foods rather than supplements.
