Red ears, Hot feeling w/tempurature changes, alcohol, anxiety???

My son is 18 y.o., he is self conscious about a condition he remembers as far back as 8th grade.

He gets red ears (both or one), hot feeling, blotchy neck/chest area, uncomfortable, feeling of heart pounding.

This happens at various times. He can be sitting doing nothing, working out (he doesn't sweat alot, face gets beat red and stay for long time), social events, and he admitting when he has a beer.

I assured him he was not alone because I also have the same symptoms ever since I can remember. So it is a family thing.

Question is can it be controlled and what might cause it. Is it a fluctuation in blood pressure, allergy, anxiety, nervousness, hormones???

Anyone have similar problems? Answers?

He is very self conscious about it, it stops him from socializing. I was embarassed about it when I was younger but now it doesn't bother me. Any help out there? Thank you.

Some people just blush/flush more than others. It's not a disease, and therefore there is no "treatment." It seems he's inherited it from you and here you are all ok. <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif"> It can be bothersome and like you said probably for him kind of embarassing. Pretty much the only thing he can do about it is avoid things that could cause flushing, such as hot liquids, caffeine, spices, or alcohol.

Problem is he still gets this when he is not eating or drinking anything. We also discussed foods or liquids that might enhance it and his chemical make up. He is bothered by it. Any other suggestions?

I also get flushed and hot when in stressful situations. My mum does too. My neck and chest and sometimes evn arms and back is all blotchy and flushed. This is caused by vasodillation. Yes, alcohol can cause this. What happens is the body directs your blood to the skin -- it's actually a sort of natural blood pressure 'reliever' on the part of your body as vasodillation causes your BP to drop. In my case if I'm stressed by BP rockets then I flush and it seems to come back down. I guess it's like a kind of safety valve! Now i take a beta blocker and I flush much less often. I do believe it's stress related.

Thank you Zack! I have been leaning to putting him on a beta blocker but we are going to keep a record of his BP before to see if it is doing what we suspect. My mum and myself also experience it, so it runs in our family. Are you an aussie or limey? We are half English, so maybe there is a relation to our nationality.

English? no, 'thankfully' i'm Scottish!! haha

yeah see how his BP is but to be fair it seems a shame for an 18 y.o. to have to start meds -- especially a beta blocker; he may get side effects. Meaning dizziness and fatigue. Beta blockers can turn you into a real zombie especcially if you are young and don't really have proper hypertension. Keep this in mind if u decide to try it out and go for a very low dose to start e.g. 25mg atenolol or 20mg propranolol.

Good luck

Thanks for the input. I don't want to start him on anything. I didn't when I was young and still don't at 39. he is just very self conscious about it. It gets less when you age. Thanks again.

Re: Red ears, Hot feeling w/tempurature changes, alcohol, anxiety???

I too have the red ears but only my right one usually and my chest. Either when I get hot or sometimes just out of the blue. I found that when I was pregnant and my blood pressure wasn't high that I didn't get that but once it went back up after I had my baby it started again. and I didn't want to face the fact that it was because my pressure was high but unforutnately since so many of us with high blood pressure get it, it must be from the high blood pressure.

Thanks for your input. I have been monitoring his BP and it is normal even during the "flashes". I am leaning toward an allergy possibly.

Hi,
I don't want to bug you or anything, but....have you considered rosacea? I get red ears, hot feelings, blotchy neck/chest, and heart pounding, and face will get beet red. I can just be sitting on the couch doing nothing and it will happen. Social events can really get it going, so can coffee, wine, sun, wind, etc. It's important to treat it early, because it can get worse. People will say, "your face is really red"...I say, I know. And they will say, I mean it's really really red. Now, I just tell them it's rosacea and try and educate them. It is embarrassing at times. Check out the site rosace.ii.net/ Hope this helps you.
Sharon

Re: Red ears, Hot feeling w/tempurature changes, alcohol, anxiety???

Thank you for your concern. I have looked into the site when I received your first email. I don't think he has rosacea. He doesn't have the facial characteristics of it. My mother and I also get the flushed neck, hot ears and warm sensation of the neck and it has never gotten worse but better as we have aged. He is going thru adolescence and I feel hormones have something to do with it plus enviormental. We will be going to the doctor soon and will bring up all the great suggestions we have received. Thanks again.
