I was wondering if my blood pressure is so high that i should worry about it. I am 20 and have a pressure of 138/80. I know that this is above average but am not sure exactly what average is or how above it i am.
When the upper number is higher than 140 and the lower number is over 90 that's when the doctor are concerned. 138 is in the upper part of normal but it's not really high and 80 isn't a problem at all
While 138/80 doesn't quite meet the definition of high bloodpressure, I would be concerned with numbers this high at just 20 years old. This may be an early indication that your diet is less than optimum. Continue down this path and you may very well have classically defined high bloodpressure in a few years. Do you have any other risk factors such as a family history of high bloodpressure or heart disease or diabetes? What about your cholesterol and triglyceride levels? Are they elevated? Are you overweight, especially around your waist? All of these, including high bloodpressure, are symptoms of Metabolic Syndrome X and insulin resistance.
