medicine or not?

My blood pressure is 130/90, my doctor prescribe the Diovan 80 mg but I didn't take it. I am 30 years old male. I don't want to be tied to the medicine for the rest of my life. I don't know if my decision is right or not. I asked my doctor and he insist that I should take medicine. Should I listen to him?

Hi Vince!

In my humble opinion, I'd try diet and exercise first. But, I'm not a doctor. My b/p was hovering around your area for quite a while. However, when we did decide to treat it we started with a mild duretic before we did anything stronger. I found cutting back on salt and caffeine lowered my bottom number by a couple of points. Good luck!

Hi Vince, before you go on medication, I would think that your doctor would have told you to try exercising and maybe changing your diet (if you're not already doing that) to try to lower it first. Was your bp 130/90 at more than one office visit?
A few years ago, my bp was running around 134/89-94...my dr. at the time was about to put me on medication. I asked him if losing weight might help...I was not really overweight (could stand to lose about 10-15 lbs at the most) so he said he didn't really think it would do anything, but I could try. Well, I was determined to try what I could...I lost 8 lbs. and completely cut out all caffeine. In the past, I'd been drinking a lot of coffee. Well, after that, my next 5 readings (at the doctors office) ranged from 120/80 to 117/75. I didn't have to go on any medication. Good luck to you!
