Why would blood pressure in my right arm always be higher than the left?

what is the reason blood pressure readings differ in each arm? my right arm reading is always a good 30 mm higher in both the systolic and diastolic readings...and i mean always!!!! what could be the reason? these readings are both at home and from my doctor.

From what I understand, the arm/hand you write with, is the arm with the higher blood pressure reading. If you write with your right hand, the right arm will reflect higher numbers. This is what was explained to me by a nurse. Is this information 100% accurate? who really knows.

Re: Weaning off of Beta Blocker Bystolic

thanks ace.. but i'm actually left handed and the higher numbers are my right hand.. i have read some articles where it says the numbers could be different in the range of up to 10... but if it is higher than a 10 difference, that it could mean something wrong. i was just wondering, because my dr's office gets this big difference as well.

Hi twin,

You should see another Dr. My references say there could be a problem with the aorta ( the largest blood vessel in the body.)

Re: Why would blood pressure in my right arm always be higher than the left?

my cardiologist has based my diagnosis of hypertension on the readings from my right arm. but sometimes this reading is so high it scares me... it has gone up to as high as 185/116 where the left arm is averaging 150/100. it doesn't stay that high, nor does it always go that high..but it does go high everyday. my average b/p readings, based on taking it 3x a day same times is 150/99. and i am on meds!!

Re: Why would blood pressure in my right arm always be higher than the left?

Questions

1.) Who takes your b/p @ the office? Nurse? or Dr.?

2.) What type of b/p machine manual or the rolling one?
Is the b/p cuff the right size?

3.) Is the proper technique followed? Arm supported, feet on the floor etc.

4.) I would be most worried about the diastolic (2nd number.)

5.) Do you have any symptoms when your b/p is high? For example: headache, vision problems, dizzy, chest pain?

6.) Do you have any abnormalities in your right arm?

Re: Why would blood pressure in my right arm always be higher than the left?

1) in the office, the med. tech takes the first reading in left arm, then my dr takes one in each arm thru the visit
2 he uses the traditional syphgmomonometer ,the one with the vertical guage, i use both, a traditional one, and a digital one
3) yes.. all the proper positions are used
4)i am worried about the diastolic, although i am still worried about the systolic
5)when my b/p is low, which is right after i take my meds, i do get very dizzy and nauseous, when it is high, i get heaviness in my chest, headache, and that's when i usually feel weird.;right in the middle of my chest
6)i have no abnormalities in either arm, but i am left handed.

i just find it odd , especially that it is such a big difference in the readings.
