Re: What are the best medications to take for high blood pressure?

Tempus,

I am on Coreg, Monoxidil, Lasix and Amlodipine- I just took a reading, and my bp is high (216/148)

When was your last medication review? Do you have them done on regular basis? Your hypertension seems out of control. Clearly, something needs to be done immediately as far as your current antihypertensive therapy. I was in the same shoes. There are drugs that, in the right combination and in the right therapeutical doses, will reduce your blood pressure to a more reasonable level.
You need to see your doctor as soon as possible. Ask to be referred to a hypertension clinic or a specialist.
Your blood pressure will be assessed for diagnosis and treatment. The office blood pressure measurements are not best indicators of what it truly is. The 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure values combined with home readings are more accurate. A great percentage of people referred to hypertension clinics by their physicians only need a few simple adjustments to their medications to attain good control of their blood pressure. Usually, the first changes made include the diuretics. Doses of the existing ones are increased, or new ones are tried.

Do you see your doctor on regular basis, and is he aware of your blood pressure readings?

Re: What are the best medications to take for high blood pressure?

This combo is a mix of what I have been on for a while and some changes during my 6 day stay in ICU last month.

What usually happens is the doctors change up my medications, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't- so they change them around until we get results and then in a month or so they no longer work.

I have had cardiologists tell me they don't know what to do at this point.

My numbers get worse every year, and now my body is starting to give way. I now have kidney disease, with my GFR results in the 40's for most of this year.

I have Severe OSA, left and right heart failure and pulmonary hypertension.

I know, although it has been higher. My personal record is 240/180. Three sprays of nitro didn't bring it down when I went to the doc. It has been very frustrating.

Re: What are the best medications to take for high blood pressure?

I though you fixed he sleep apnea issue?

As fr the rest, I don't know. I just can't believe there is nothing they can do for you. My Dad has all kinds of heart issues after 4 open heart surgeries and they are able to keep his pressure down better than mine a 104/55. Granted he gets out of breath walking too much but he is 82.

I would look for another specialst if I were you.

Do you feel ok? Out of breath, headaches, sick to your stomach, ears ringing, tightness in your chest?

No, it isn't fixed. But it was a relief discovering it so we had a reason as to why my BP is insane. Up until the sleep study a few years ago, all other tests under the sun to find causes of my hypertension were negative.

I have tried CPAP a few times, and I'm now on BiPAP... put no matter the setting I still stop breathing.

I had severe headaches when I was young, just dealt with them though.

These days I have chest pains, tightness, and I am always short of breath. I'm exhausted every single day, it is really getting old. I'm having a hard time accepting that I cannot do 90% of the things I have normally done.

I have Severe OSA, left and right heart failure and pulmonary hypertension.
I've suffered from Heart Failure, Chronically High Blood Pressure for many years (which has now been under control for years) and Insulin Resistance/Pre-Diabetes for over 24 years. I've learned how to co-exist with my heart disease and my other health problems, and live with a good quality of life and a constantly improving health.

I've posted a thread entitled: What I have done to survive Heart Failure & AFib with a high quality of life, which is one of the threads within the Heart Disorders topic, if you would like to read what I have done. The direct link is: http://www.healthboards.com/boards/showthread.php?t=742271

I hope that you can find something that works for you and gets your blood pressure down to a consistently healthy level.

Regards, and best of luck and health to you.

Re: What are the best medications to take for high blood pressure?

Your readings were no where near as close as his. Your readings were between stage 1 and pre hypertension.

Medications seem to work well for you as well.

Re: What are the best medications to take for high blood pressure?

When their are kidney related problems, this can effect high blood pressure readings. It becomes a vicious cycle, involving the kidneys, heart and circulation. Definitely, cut out salt and try to increase your water consumption. If stress/anxiety is a major factor, even a mild tranquilizer can help relax the system. I think you have to try different medications, possibly switching from Coreg and Amlodipine to another beta blocker and calcium blocker. Perhaps Toprol and Procardia. Also, you can supplement with Fish Oil, Vitamin D and Magnesium. I was low on Vitamin D, and supplementation helped lower my cholesterol and blood pressure. If doctors can't help control your numbers, you need to try a natural approach or better yet, seek an alternative doctor.

Re: What are the best medications to take for high blood pressure?

I've been put on a fluid restriction. The kidney issue is new- caused by the BP.

I take one a day vitamins, krill oil and CoQ10

Re: What are the best medications to take for high blood pressure?

Have they done the 24hr urine test? Just wondering what your fluid intake was before the restriction, and what it is now. Does the fluid restriction seem to be helping? I have just had mine done and am waiting for results. I have fluid retention issues as well. The problem is (IMHO) that once the delicate fluid balance is disturbed or compromised, it is difficult, if not impossible, to set it right again.

Re: What are the best medications to take for high blood pressure?

Tempus,

As you know --your BP is not being controlled. I was surprised that nitro does not relax your cardio system at all?? What is you pulse rate? Are you not taking an ACE inhibitor??

A suggestion is to change CoQ10 to Ubiquinol and take a 100mg capsule twice daily(because CoQ10 is not well absorbed) and change to a Omega 3 Fish oil --1000mg -3 time daily --- this is what I take and with alot of investigation is the doses that are theraputic.

I hope your Docs are giving you a diuretic like Lasix to make sure you are not retaining any excess fluid any where-- you may need it by an IV injection.

God Bless---Harry

Re: What are the best medications to take for high blood pressure?

Harry-

My pulse is in the high 90s usually. I had been on the ace inhibitor lisinopril up until recently. It makes me cough a lot, and it was making my sleep apnea treatment a nightmare with cpap.

I'm not familiar with Ubiquinol, I will definitely look into it. I'm nowhere near 3000mg of omega 3.

I am on Lasix, 160mg per day. Sometimes my lower legs and ankles swell and when I lay down my lungs bubble from time to time.

Re: What are the best medications to take for high blood pressure?

I did two 24hr urine tests about 2 years ago. They were looking for adrenal problems- both were negative.

I always drank lots of water but now I'm supposed to drink 6 cups only.
