Just Diagnosed with High Blood Pressure at 37 yrs old and scared!

I knew that hypertention was in my family history, my mom and all her brothers and sisters have it, but I wasn't really concerned about it because I'm not a big salt person, i'm not obese and I dont drink or smoke. But my last check up 3 weeks ago was a bit high. 126/75. Since that visit, it's been going up. This morning it was 160/90.... So I hot tailed it to my Dr's office and it had gone done a bit to 140/80. Why would it all of a sudden go up? I thought it would gradually go up if you were developing Hypertention... I do have high anxiety, i lost my job a few months ago. Plus I am having my monthly cycle. Plus i'm about 20 lbs overweight. My Dr started me on some BP meds and will reevaluate me in a month. I'm hoping it's a temporary thing and that i haven't developed full blown hypertention... I knew the family risks but thought there would be at least a slow climb in my BP to give me a warning.. But it just came on within 3 weeks... Now i'm thinking since i'm only 37 that i'm in bad shape and will have to watch my BP forever. I'm scared!! Any advise on how to deal with this would be great.. Is there anyone else my age on here with it?

Re: Just Diagnosed with High Blood Pressure at 37 yrs old and scared!

Hi littleginger,

I actually started off with hypertension in my late 20's which progressed into super high BP's and eventually 4 strokes at age 43. I am now 50.

Rather than be afraid, I would encourage you to be pro-active and stop the hypertension before any serious damage is done. See if you can drop some of that extra weight, get on some medication, and get yourself a blood pressure machine. those three things will go a long way toward a lifetime of good health.

The good news for you is that you have caught it early, and damage from HBP is a slow moving thing. We have never had a better understanding of the dangers of HBP or better medications than we do today. When I was going through the earlier years of my experience with HBP, there was little information and I really had no idea what could happen until it was too late.

As far as diet, my doctor always recommends me to shop around the outside of the store, rather than in the middle isles where the processed foods are.

Don't be afraid, just be informed. Having anxiety can also cause spikes in your BP, so the more you can learn to calm yourself and avoid stressful situations the better.

When you do use a home BP monitor, only use it twice a day when you are calm and resting. If you keep a log of your BP's you may see a trend in your BP's that you can show to your doctor to help with your choice of medications.

Are you using anything to help with the anxiety? Often, if the anxiety is controlled, you will not see the spikes in BP.

Feel free to ask any questions you have, we are here to help, and this is a subject that many of us deal with everyday. Wishing you the best...

Yep, developed HTN at 21 (32 now). The onset was quite sudden for me as well (one month 118/60s then 150s/90s the next and never to come back down.

Get on a drug that you feel good on, watch your blood pressure regularly (weekly at least), lose weight if you can; do cardio exercise; lower your cardiovascular risks in other areas - cholesterol, HDL, LDL, etc.
