Blood Pressure Suddenly Went Very High (170/110)

Hello, I'm new here. I had my annual physical about 6 weeks ago, and my pressure and lab results were all excellent. Just last week I visited an urgent because I hurt my back. As part of that visit, my BP was checked and it was very high, about 180/110. The clinic asked me to come back the next day to see if it had dropped as the pain in my back lessened. My BP was still very high, around 170/105. I continued to monitor over the week and it remained the same. I made an appt with my GP and he put me on Altace 10mg daily. I took my first dose last night, and checked my pressure today. It's 181/112.

I don't expect the Altace to begin working immediately, but I am concerned that my pressure is so high, especially since it was perfect up until at least a month ago. My GP assured me that it can shoot up like that.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Also, for those on Altace, how long until you noticed any benefits?

I had a similar experience, so I share your pain! I didn't hurt my back, but about 3 months ago I was diagnosed with a potentially life-altering condition. This caused tremendous stress for me, and caused my BP to spike and my heart to beat rapidly on most days. After 2 months of visiting doctors and specialists, my condition turned out to be benign - Thank God.

However, it's been 1 month since this positive revelation, but my BP is still about 5-10 points higher than before, both systolic and diastolic. I worry that my BP is permanently increased, but there's not much I can do about it now, except treat my current BP level. So I give you the same advice - treat your BP, be patient, and things should work out. After all, you had normal BP before this episode, and in general most people do find that their BP can be controlled with medication. Let's work on this. Good luck!

Thank you Realazy. It's interesting you mention that there was a stressful trigger to your high BP, because I did have a stressful incident several weeks ago that could have potentially cost me a lot of money. That situation has since been resolved, and my situation is nowhere near as bad as it could have been. But that may have been the trigger, and my BP has remained high since.

OK, so that makes 2 of us. However, I haven't seen any literature on the web that says that such "persistent BP triggers" exist. Most sites I've read say that stress is temporary, and that once the stressor is removed, BP should go back down. But I guess in both our cases, the BP is persistent even though the stressor is gone. So we'll have to wait and see if it ever goes back down. Fingers crossed!

Just the fact that you're both thinking about your BP is causing a stressful situation. Try to forget about for a while. I know that's hard, but it's what you have to do. You've gotten yourself in a cycle of anxiety and developed "white coat" syndrome which causes your BP to rise every time you think about having your pressure taken, even if you're doing it yourself. Stop taking measurements for a while. Stay on meds, if that's what the doctor says and "forget about it"! Hopefully, it will go back to normal when you stop stressing. Good luck

Thanks for the advice rudiraven. You're right, I do find that, in the past few days, my first readings have been about 5-10pts higher than subsequent readings. So stress/anxiety is definitely present. It'll be hard to not think about it, but I'll give it a try!
