wine, caffeine and blood pressure

for the first time, I've had high blood pressure at the doctor's office. 155/95
After 15 minutes of taking it on a machine in her office, it came back down to 133/88 ish range.
I'm concerned so I've given it some thought
I am female, 46 year old, 136 lbs, non smoker, jog, bike, weight lifting, very good diet.
first of all, should I be worried?

I think part of my problem may be coffee and wine
I drink appx 4 cups of coffee per day and (shame) between 3 to 4 glasses of wine 4 times a week.
I've cut all that out. and I'll get a bp monitor and keep an eye on it.

What are your thoughts?

Re: wine, caffeine and blood pressure

Your numbers are not all that high but cutting out or at least cutting back on the coffee and wine is probably a VERY good idea as they are stimulants. Some people are more sensative then others so it just might be affecting your BP. Keeping an eye on it will help you know if it is indeed the coffee etc.

Good luck...JJ...

Re: wine, caffeine and blood pressure

Most people like the Omron although others have said they bought the WalMart brand which I believe is Reli? I have an Omron and my Dr. said it was one of the best. When buying it make sure the cuff is suitable for you as too tight or loose is no good. Was also told NOT to buy the wrist type.

Good luck...JJ...

Re: wine, caffeine and blood pressure

I purchased a blood pressure monitor: omron BP755 from Costco
It's the upper arm model
I was really nervous about taking my first reading, scared the numbers were going to be high. I have a slight headache and warm. I've been sitting down for 15 minutes and fretting about it. Feels like jumping off the high diving board!
Anyways, firts numbers on left arm: 113/72
So I thought it couldn't be right and did it again but on the right arm this time: 109/72
I don't really know why I always worry for the worst sinve I should really trust these numbers more than my. Doctor's since my bp has always been around these numbers. That is why I was so shoked about the high numbers this time around in her office.
I'll keep monitoring

Re: wine, caffeine and blood pressure

If the caffeine makes you nervous or jittery, better to cut down a bit. Also, two glasses of wine seems to be the upper limit for health benefits...so maybe you can try to limit a bit on that. Wine is also very sugary, so better not to drink too much of it for that reason also. Good luck!
