I am a 39 y.o female who started BP meds in 2010. I was put on Adalat XL 30 and 50mg of HCTZ per day.
Fast forward to summer 2012 and I have lost 35lbs, cut back drastically on smoking (plan to quit by the end of this year) and my daily readings were around 110/65. One day my doctor took my bp and it was 106/60! So she said, "Let's take you off the Adalat and see how you do just on the HCTZ". My BP went back to hovering around 115/70 to 120/75. So we left me on just the 50mg of HCTZ.
Well 3 weeks ago I was unable to refill my prescription and went almost 3 weeks without the HCTZ. My BP readings have been 145 or 150 for Systolic and as high as 102 on diastolic.
I've been back on my HCTZ for 3 days and have lost 3lbs of water but not movement in my numbers. Will it take a while for the numbers to go back down? How long? I am pretty sure the stress of seeing big numbers again isn't helping either. I just had a pressure of 146/99 and am freaking right out.
Yes it takes 2-3 weeks to get max benefit from many of these drugs. Be patient and dont worry about a reading of 150. This is no cause for alarm unless it continues long term....Congrats on the smoking and I truly hope you quit.

The diastolic of 99 is what freaked me out. Today my pressures have been 130-135 but over 95-99 for the diastolic. :/
I agree, relax and give the medication a period of time to return to your controlled Blood Pressure readings. The last thing you ever want to do when you have HBP, is to allow yourself to stress out, for any reason. It is the first thing that will raise your BP.
Well all weekend my BP readings were anywhere from 125-145 for Systolic and 85-102 for diastolic. I think I need to call my doctor in the morning. I really hate the anxiety this causes!
I went to my GP today and she put me back on Adalat. 30mg XR and dropped my hydrochlorithiazide to 25mg a day. I took the Adalat (I think it's Procardia in the US) about 8 hours ago and my bp is already down. Is that normal?
