High bp in a.m. then drops next few hours

I'm a 78 year old female. I've had uncontrolled bp for over a year & been on many med combos as well as have seen multiple specialists. I had an atrophic kidney (due to renal artery stenosis) removed in hopes of help. The surgery has given me o.k. bp for more of the day, but I'm still having uncontrolled bp but am down to taking 50 mg of Losartan a day. There seems to be a pattern to my bp in that it's high in the a.m. (200/100) then drops w/o any medicine (85/45). Sometimes the numbers aren't this drastic, but the pattern is there. I'm physically exhausted and can sleep solidly many hours a day or push through but feel miserable doing so. I also have difficulty thinking through simple tasks like filling my pill container. Another odd symptom, altho just started recently, is I get hot flashes.

Any help out there?

Sorry that you are having problems with your bp.

Regarding patterns in the blood pressure? I posted a thread a while back titled: My 24 Hour Blood Pressure Averages for 2003 compared with 2008 which has charts showing the hourly patterns of my blood pressure, which might give you some useful information. The link is: http://www.healthboards.com/boards/high-low-blood-pressure/648139-my-24-hour-blood-pressure-averages-2003-compared-2008-a.html

I hope that the posts can be helpful to you.

Best of luck and health to you in 2013!

Re: High bp in a.m. then drops next few hours

My mother who is 79 has very similar issues with her BP. It will go over 200 at times and as low as 70/? at other times. She has seen many specialists and no real answer. She has just gone through a divorce and we think this contributes to her BP. No one can give her any solid answers.

This is the patient's daughter responding.... I don't know your mother, but mine is a solid rock. I've learned doctors are quick to blame symptoms on age & fragile females. Her original GP said she had whitecoat syndrome instead of taking her bp issue seriously. And then he gave her medication. We are headed to Cleveland Clinic. I'll post what we discover & good luck to your mother. I would only suggest you monitor everything the doctors say & recommend. My mom is a retired RN & what everyone needs to understand is doctors are not gods, they can be wrong, and they will never care as much for each individual patient as the family will.

Yes, I know you are right. She has really good doctors, but they can only do so much. We always go with her to the doctor, and know that they try all kinds of meds and nothing helps. We think its stress and emotions related. She talked with her exhusband last night, and this morning her BP was low. Generally if her BP is low or even high in the morning, she just eats and it stabilizes. She never had BP issues until 2-3 years ago. My daughter is a PA and son-in-law a medical resident and they have no answers. I would love to stay in contact with you and see what you find out from the Cleveland Clinic. I've always said there has to be other people out there with similar issues.
