Does atenolol cause lung problems?

I've just been diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, and I am stunned. I do not know what has caused the scaring of my lungs. I have done a little surfing on the web, and found beta blockers cause lung damage. Has anyone else had this problem. I would like to go off atenolol, but I hear it is a nightmare but I will do it if it is the problem. Any help would be deeply appreciated . . . I'm really stressed, and don't know what to do.

Re: Does atenolol cause lung problems?

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis of pulmonary fibrosis. I certainly wish you the best of luck and recovery.

You could ask your doctor if he would consider prescribing a different class of medication (like a "calcium channel blocker" or "ace inhibitor", etc) to replace the "beta blocker" atenolol. A replacement medication might make the withdrawal from atenolol somewhat easier.

You would then be able to see if your pulmonary fibrosis gradually gets better after you stop taking the atenolol.

Thank you for your kind words. I am definitely going to ask the Dr., and thanks for telling me that switching to something else could help the withdrawal.

Re: Does atenolol cause lung problems?

I can assure you that there is no evidence that beta blockers cause pulmonary fibrosis. However, getting off a beta blocker is a good idea when its only being used to treat hypertension.

All the best.
