Recent High Blood Pressure

I have been getting fairly consistently high BP readings over the last two months but also extremely variable.

Latest one 168/92 BP 92 @ 4:00 pm (after working in garage)

This morning woke up 107/81 9:00 am

Had a bath - after the bath 126/77 - 10:00

Two hours later 145/85 HR-88

I am an anxious person so this variability happens a lot.

I am 56. Have I wrecked my arteries because of excessive stress (on and off over 30 years) and now my bp will not go down because of hardening of the arteries?

When I ride my bike - hard for 1 hour and take my reading immediately after it was 126/77 HR 115.

Any input is appreciated.

I am not on any medication yet

Would more exercise help to bring consistency to my readings. I don't drink or smoke but have drunk coffee over the years.

Thanks

Re: Recent High Blood Pressure

Your arteries aren't wrecked from 2 months of internittent high blood pressure, but once people develop high BP it usually stays that way, unless some other factor changes a lot, like a big weight loss. Most high BP is age and hereditary related. Stress can be one factor but is not usually the only one. It is important to see your Dr., and take your readings with you. It is normal for BP to be lower in AM and after exercise. There are lifestyle changes and medications, diet changes that can get it down to normal levels. It is high enough to require treatment, so I wouldn't delay in getting an appointment.

Are you resting for 10-15 minutes before taking a reading? This is important in order to get your true resting bp.

You might try to avoid caffeine (coffee, tea, chocolate, soda, energy drinks, etc.) for a few days and see if your blood pressure gets better. Caffeine can cause higher blood pressure and heart palpitations in certain individuals.
