HIV (Pregnant Woman)

Hi All !

My girlfriend is pregnant past 8 months. We did test for HIV in a well reputated hospital in August and fairly it was negative. But after having test she went to her mother house. There she went to a district hospital as a place is not well advanced. She did again same test as the doctor said they can't proceed with other hospital test. And after getting the test it was positive.!

My question is it possible like that ???

Please reply soon...!!!

Re: HIV (Pregnant Woman)

from what i understand healthcare in india is a mess.
it is very hard to find a properly qualified doctor
as there are lot of fakes...

so unfortanatly things like you say can happen.
in this country that would be pretty unheard of or
extremly rare.
it would also depend on the exact circumstance of what test did you have?
operator error can mess up tests, glove powder for instance..
it probably doesn't matter any way at this point.

any way sorry for the bad news

the absolute best you can do
for mother and child would be to insure they get
the best and proper care you can find.
i have read gov hospitals there are pretty reliable in india
good luck!
they both will be fine
as long as they get the care they will need...

Re: HIV (Pregnant Woman)

Hi Smiteler..!!

Thank you so much for replying to my question.
I would like to get more deeper..I did a test in (You can say one of the top India's hospital- "Fortis Hospital") and the result came out to be fairly negative. We both were so happy..But then she came to know she is HIV + in a District Hospital in her place. This completely insane. There she has been told to take a medicine (ART) for HIV +.

Now my question is how long a person can live with HIV + when taking that medicine..??
Do I have to get tested after all this..??
And what special care can I take towards my girlfriend..Bcoz I love her so much and I'm scared of loosing her..!!

Please reply soon...!!!

Thanks.

Thanks.
don't be afraid of losing her.
a person with hiv can have a fairly normal
life span with the proper care and meds.
the meds work and work very well i might add.
i have been living with it for 13 years now.

the best thing to do
is to take the best care of yourself that you can.
eat right, exercise and make sure she sticks with her meds
and gets monitored by a good doctor
she will be ok.

if i were you i would get checked out also just to be safe
it is great you are standing by and supporting her
the mental part can be the hardest at times
good luck to you both

Re: HIV (Pregnant Woman)

congrats on the boy!!!!
that is great news.
as long as she takes good care of herself
she will be around for him for a long time.

i would recommend you use a condom also when you have sex
with your wife
for a few reasons... one would be to keep you hiv neg...
i'm sure you would be discussing this with your doctor also
as i'm sure they will be telling you the risks of mother to
child transmissions.
congrats again on the boy!
good luck

Re: HIV (Pregnant Woman)

Dear Vinay,
Sometimes when you take a test one will test negative if s/he is in the window period. After three months you have to test again.
Now even in India, a false negative is extremely rare. Both private hospitals and government hospitals (ICTC) are extremely efficient as HIV is a simple test. Even the rapid tests are very reliable.

But I am surprised that she is put on ART (Anti Retroviral Therapy). All those who are positive need not take ART. Only when the immunity is well below the normal ART is prescribed. If the CD4 count is more than 300 one need not take ART. But many private practitioners are prescribing the medicine immediately after the HIV tests. Even without ART many of my friends are living with HIV for 10 to 15 years. Once you start ART, one can live for another 10 to 15 years with good life style and nutrition.

Cool Re: HIV (Pregnant Woman)

Hello, sorry about that, but it is advisable to have HIV test from reputable hospital and repeat the test after three moths.

Let your Girlfriend try it again from a good hospital.
