Sooo after reading that article, I'm even more depressed than I was before I read it. I had a test done 6 months after a possible exposure.. it was negative. So, according to that article, I may not test positive for a couple years if I have HIV??

that article is from 1991. since it was published tests have improved greatly and the window period for testing has gotten shorter. the cdc just recently changed its window period to three months. the window period before it was six months. your test is considered conclusive for both the new and old window period.

I understand the window period, but what freaks me out is the fact I went to the dentist and about 4-6 weeks later i became very ill. I had a fever, sore throat, cough. I took and anitbiotic and then i developed a rash. I may have gotten HIV from the dentist!

To the last poster. Getting HIV from an occupational dentist visit is NOT a common means of trnamission. If my memory is correct, the CDC has only reported about half a dozen cases in the last 15 years. And this because of special conditions. You should not worry about having got HIv from a dentist, nor a hair salon or barber shop.

Just watch out for the common way (unprotected sex, sharing needles, etc).
