Hiv from performing oral sex and swallowing precum

Hi I have had a lot of sleepless nights the past few days and I need to know a few things. First here is my story. I am a very shy persona and a very introverted person so I don't meet many people. I have never had sex or kissed someone on the lips other than members of my family. This has recently started to take a toll on my emotional state. I consider myself straight but my shyness was getting to the point where my line of thinking was that I would never meet women that would want me. This made me start thinking about the alternative. I recently found Craigslist casual personals and began searching those. I posted an ad in la this weekend and found a 22 year old gay Latino man who sent me an e-mail that basically said "I'm 22 gay looking to hang out, safe clean and laid back" we started to text each other and made up a time to meet at my hotel room. I asked him if he had done this before and he laughed and said he was gay but said he had only met someone in a hotel twice before. He comes to my room and asks to use the bathroom and I can hear him peeing, what does this mean? Then he asks me what I have done before and If Iím married and I told me never have I done anything before and Iím not married. He then said we need to turn the lights off (this worried me for some reason, why would he want to do that? Is it because he is trying to hide something?) We get naked and I inspect his body it is very smooth and clean without any marks that I can see and no open soars. He then starts performing oral sex calmly. I then start to perform oral sex on him. He was uncut and that worries me a little. I also tasted something funny when I first started to suck. I don't know if it was urine or precum, I assume it was precum. The taste was funny so I kind of resisted swallowing and kept whatever it was in my mouth. I then swallowed a little bit of it and eventually all of it. There was also lots of my saliva at this point. The amount of what I think was precum was very little, I didn't feel like I could even swish it around my mouth or anything it was just a funny taste. I didn't enjoy it at all, I could barely stay hard and wasnít into this at all. I don't think he was either, so neither of us came in each others mouth other than precum. We then jerked ourselves off and he leaves. There was no kissing no anal no ejaculation other than the precum I tasted or at least think I tasted. My mouth didnít have any open soars on it or cuts and my gums only bleed a little when I floss heavily. I didnít brush until after the encounter was over and then it was about 10 mins after he left when I did brush.

However over the last few days I've felt this panic that now I have hiv and it has been very bad, I havenít been able to sleep well and I am very scared. I texted the man I did this with and asked him are you "100% sure you are free" I think I made him mad with my barrage of texts and he responded "stop texting me and not Iím not 100% sure."

I have been reading this site as well as tons of others and the medical sites say that I may be at risk because of the precum from his penis if he is hiv pos. I'm not sure if he is but I am going to assume so since I hear that most people with hiv don't know they have it and if that I can assume since this guy is on craigslist that it is a real possibility due to the extreme risk of hooking up on craigslist.

But then I read on this site and others that say there is a ZERO risk chance that I have gotten hiv. Can you please help me. Why do you guys say no but when I read medical sites they act like it is a 50 50 shot?

Re: Hiv from performing oral sex and swallowing precum

Even if he has the virus, it's not a 50/50 shot. It is much lower.

It is very difficult to talk numbers, because EVERY case is different. But know that 50% of people who get stuck with a needle used on an HIV patient don't catch it. Closer to 1% catch it. The highest statistic I've read is 2%. (Approx. 1-2 or fewer out of every 100 times such a needlestick occurs.)

Your risk would be significantly lower than a needlestick, in my opinion.

That said, someone who hooks up on Craig's List and doesn't use condoms is not low risk. I would consider him a high-risk sexual partner but this a lower risk exposure. Pre-ejaculatory fluid does not contain as much of the virus. Then, HIV starts to die off in saliva. It does not get to the bloodstream as easily via the mouth as other types of sex (or with needles.) Since you were not exposed to semen and it was "only" oral sex, I'd guess that your risk is much much lower than you're thinking it is.

The best thing you can do is go talk to a doctor and ask about your risk and all of the testing options. There is more sophisticated testing now that can give you a good idea of your status sooner.

I would be very surprised if you caught HIV through this. However, there are other STDs you can catch via oral sex, so be sure to get tested for those when your doctor says the tests will be accurate.

Please don't panic, because your risk is low. Take this as a learning opportunity. Seek medical advice for your peace of mind. The hard times will be over soon.

Let me add a few things:
The cases I've read that seemed to indicate a 50/50 shot are:
1) In one case, an adult film star who unknowingly contracted HIV infected approximately half of the women he shot films with (while newly infected) before testing positive a month later. (They are tested monthly.) However, he was newly infected and thus had a very high viral load, and the sexual acts were high risk acts (vaginal or anal sex.) Not to mention, this could just be a rumor.
2) In an HIV study (I'm assuming to test medications) done on primates, they infected them rectally and virtually all of the test animals contracted the virus within 2 exposures. However, this was with laboratory high-viral load solutions.

Those are the only two cases I've seen where a 50% shot was claimed. These are NOT comparable to real life situations. I'm not sure which medical studies you read?

There's no way to do a study to actually find out how high the risk is via oral sex, but from everything I have read, when they do surveys and look at populations of people, it is 1 out of thousands.

Another reason people on this board say oral sex = virtually no chance is that there are virtually no documented cases (a few claims) and many reasons why it's difficult to contact HIV through oral sex (it starts to die in saliva, is killed by stomach acid, etc.)

We have had debates on this board before where I say to the person, go get tested just in case, and other people say, he is going to test negative, don't scare him needlessly, he couldn't have caught it through oral sex. And maybe they are right, because the way the virus actually behaves in "real life" is different from theoretical risk.

Re: Hiv from performing oral sex and swallowing precum

Thanks for the info and help.

But i'm still very nervious. I noticed a little bump on my right tonsil, for all I know it could have always been there but Its making me worry, also my tonsils look like they are off center with my mouth. I also have a pain in my neck when I turn to the right and look down. That part of my next has been giving me problems for weeks even before the incident but it seems ot hurt worse today.

The incident occured on the 25th when can I get a test and feel comfortable that I'm safe?

I'd say get tested at 3 months post exposure in order to get a definitive answer. Though, for peace of mind, I might get tested now and again later. However, I tend to be obsessive about things so maybe testing now wouldn't be a good idea.

Forget about the pain and symptoms.. they arnt consistance with HIV. The risk of oral exposure is 0.4% - 0% by others, basically its not considered a risk. If you choose to test for peace of mind, an insti or ora rapid can be done after 7 days ( 95% ) accurate, 4 weeks duo ( 98% ) and 13 weeks conclusive.. I would recommend STI testing just to be on the safe side as anyone who is sexually active should get tested regularly.

Re: Hiv from performing oral sex and swallowing precum

I had a pcr dna test and an anti-body test done at 28 days and both came back negative. Am I in the clear?

Well good news then . Well standard guide lines say 13 weeks. Some experts say 6 - 10 ( depending on the generation of testing ) Personally 13 weeks would be Fully conclusive. At 4 weeks it will be 95% acurate in detecting HIV. So yes you do need to test again, but the results are very encouraging and unlikley to change. Also remember you risk was almost zero, so i cant see your results changing on that basis to. Forget about it and just test at 13 weeks for your own peace of mind.

Regards

Apollo

PFE--Couple things,1) the porn incident if it's the one from 2004 was high risk as it was prolonged, double anal penetration, numerous times. His incident is not high risk.

the statistical odds are:

1 in 2000 insertive if known to have HIV.005%
1 in 200 if needle ***** .5%
1 in 100 to 200 receptive anal
1 in 10,000 oral and many beliveve no risk with oral.

and the 2 cases you claimed dont show a 50% shot.

at the end of the day we all agree the best thing to do is test.
know that symptoms or lack of symptoms isn't indicative.

You can search hundreds of posts where people have every ARS symptom in the world and see others who are positive state they had no symptoms at all.

The reality is HIV is a dificult disease to catch, not impossible however. Take precautions, get tested. Statistically things are in your favor.

we are all here to support each other
