Can you test Negative but still be positive...?

Hi,

I had an encounter with a sexual worker earlier this year, since which post incident I had discharge, eye infection and Urine Infection all about 4-10wks. I went to my local GUM clinic and was tested for all the normal things (Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and HIV) all came back negative. I was so relieved and got on with things anyway I then started to have sore throat, night sweats, rash near genital area and also got thrush and was feeling fatigue I went doctors and they put me on antibiotics etc... and at that point I decided to have a Duo Test for HIV which came back negative. Anyway since April when I started with these symptoms I have had a further Duo Test, another test at 85days at the GUM clinic and an Insti Test at 6mths all came back negative. I'm married with two young children and have had unprotected sex with my wife after the 3mth result and 6mth but both times have felt guilty as the symptoms haven't gone away. I even thought I was going mental so was put on beta blockers and went to councilling and hypnotherapy both of which seemed to work and I was told I didn't need to come anymore as my outlook was positive again. Yet the symptoms still continue the main ones being sore throat and thrush in mouth with white spots, diarrhea, upset stomach and the night sweats (which are alot better than they were don't get as wet as I did at the start). I've continued to see GP with a view to getting to bottom of this and have an appointment with ENT surgeon today however I'm really concerned especially given the unprotected sex with my wife that I could have HIV and the tests are picking it up is this possible?!

For completeness if it helps test was roughly at these stages - Gum Clinic test (not sure which one they use at 4wks and 85days), Private Clinic Duo Test at about 10wks and 16wks and Insti Test at 6mths.

Thanks
Dave

Re: Can you test Negative but still be positive...?

Hi Dave, in short it is possible to get false positives and negative with older gerneration testing types ( not used much now days, and not at private or gum clinics ) but they happen mainly at the 4 week mark. The lastest gerneration testing is 99.9% acurate ( nothing is ever 100% ) In you case, with all the tests you had your certainly HIV negative. The private clinic and GUM clinic use the lastest tests, so be assured your NEgative. Forget symptoms belive in results..

PS all the symptoms your having, im having. I just have a simple Viral infection, and im HIV -

Regards

Apollo

Re: Can you test Negative but still be positive...?

Apollo,

Thanks for reassurance I keep getting positive about this especially when I receive results but then when symptoms persist with no real answers (6mths+ now) I keep getting concerned maybe for some reason it just isn't being detected given this all started after the initial sexual encounter. I could live with it just being me but now can't stop thinking if I would have put my wife in great danger by having unprotected sex with her a couple of times recently and also what about my two young children. I'm not stupid and know that guilt can play a large part here hence why I went to the councilling and hypnotherapy and told my wife everything just can't make sense of this... I never got an answer to my initial discharge, the main bit that concerns me is the fatigue, constant glands being swollen, night sweats and the uncomfortable throat and mouth sensation (feels like I've eaten something which has burnt my mouth) hopefully the ENT Surgeon will help just don't feel good with all this at moment I guess.

Sorry to go on a little!

P.S. I know people might think I'm exaggerating but trust me I'm not as each time my GP has agreed with the infections and put me on the relevant medication / hence I know some of it could be mind but not to this degree.

Dave

Hi Dave, Guilt and stress will wear your body down. You feel guilt for what you did, and worry you may have passed somthing on.. You didnt ok? Forget what happened, whats done is done. As for medication, yup me to i was very ill, but im still negative Also, your not the only person to have made a mistake, and the symptoms are classics signs of stress..

Heres a thing you must belive and understand ok?? With all the symptoms you have had, and that long a period of time, you can be assured the results WOULD certainly have picked up the virus if you had it. You are most certainly HIV -

Hope that helps

Re: Can you test Negative but still be positive...?

Just an update went to see ENT surgeon who confirmed there appears to be something strange going on with my mouth and throat and doesn't want to rule anything out, he also stated that he was concerned given this that I was also getting night sweats and had a rash around genitials. He asked me the question I was anticipating which was had I had a HIV test which I stated yes and told him the relevant tests I have had. He asked me whether I had had a blood count test which I said had various blood tests which all came back fine not sure about the specifics around blood count test though. He has given me some medication and asked me to come back for further tests now concerned that he may think I have a issue as to why HIV isn't being dectected (i.e. is it less likely to be spotted if blood count is different that normal...?!). I still feel tired all time, eyes hurt, headaches, rash getting worse around groin/genitial area and throat and mouth still not good - really getting me down as my partner isn't feeling well either and has had diarreah and sore back with a numbness and pins and needless, then to make worse my two year old has come out with a bad rash today!

If you are having these symptoms does anybody know if this means whilst you have tests you are more likely or less likely to be picked up in the 99% accuracy rate, I keep thinking what if I'm in the 1% rate should I get my wife to have a test but the stress that will put her under - just not good advice please?!

Thanks

Re: Can you test Negative but still be positive...?

Hi Dave.. Just to confirm, i said 99.9 lol. But having more than one test your results are certainly 100%. Really you are HIV negative. Having thoses symptoms then being negative, be assured your negative. Just to let you know, it must be a simualr virus im having.. same symptoms, rash, night sweats bad sore thoat etc, but its not HIV. HIV wouldnt last this long tbh, and if it was, then you would have been in hopspital. the fact your child is not well, really confirms its a virus.
PS the rash around your genitals, could simply be a sweat rash from the night sweats

One test you might consider, is testing for herpes. Im not saying it is, just that it is very common, although at the gum clinic they would look for that, but somtimes its not that visable, so they test for it..... Also you could test for Oral STD's.. again not saying it is, just another option.

I cant say what is wrong with you, but HIV it isnt Dave.. PS try salt water ( hot ) for the throat for a week ( 3 times a day ), it really works for infections..

Hope that helps, please stop worring, but let us know things go, all well im sure

Apollo

Re: Can you test Negative but still be positive...?

Dave,

I am int he same boat...Apollo has been a helpful reassurance. I have tested at 13,23,28,42,45,56,70,77 and 84 days out all neg (42, 56 and 70 were oral swab and 84 was rapid blood)

i DID A 13 AND 28 DAYS DNA PCR both neg

I have had swollen lymph nodes since day 15, fatigue, weight loss, muscle joint pain and still test neg.

Every DR. i talk to tells me to trust the tests withthat many tests one would have picked it up by now

Re: Can you test Negative but still be positive...?

Thanks for your response, if somebody could have said a year ago I would go on a mind bender like this I wouldn't have believed them. I can't believe how much this is stressing me out and I'm sure some of it might be the guilt I feel if I had got it and the fact that I could and possibly would have passed it on to my wife etc...

I'm trying to think positive again, I guess I'm getting frustrated that there is no explanation for these and they happened to start straight after the incident with discharge never being explained and the symptoms continuing get antibiotics they go away and then come back....

I'm thinking of going to GUM Clinic for one last test given my three month test was just before three months and my 6mth test was a insti which might not be as accurate as the GUM Clinic test. Hopefully doing that and continuing going to Doctors and ENT surgeon will help to get to bottom of this.

My daughter has spots they aren't sure what they are could be chickenpox however they are more worried about an infection she has in her head despite antibiotics doesn't appear to be clearing up so that isn't helping my mind!

Thanks
Dave

Re: Can you test Negative but still be positive...?

Is there an update on what's going on with you, DavieJL?

I'm having the same kind of crap happen and I tested negative 11 months after exposure with a rapid finger stick test then negative a month later making it a full year.

- Loss of appetite
- thrush (possible OHL)
- Fatigue
- dry cough
- psoriasis rash outbreak.

Pretty frustrating and scary.

Hope you're feeling better.

Re: Can you test Negative but still be positive...?

I have the same symtomps and so far 8 week result is negative.

I think it might be related to a virus which is not STD, you saying your kid is having some symptoms that proves that it is not HIV.

You cant have HIV not detected for 6 month, that is absolutely not possible. Average window period is 21-25 days. Means some people even test positive in less than 21 days. 3 months cover almost everyone unless your have a very serious health issue, which means you immune system is absolutely weak which is not your case as per your blood cells count tests.

You need to relax, so many people here envy you for your 6 month negative test and no HIV specialist wil even think of HIV after these tests you had.

Re: Can you test Negative but still be positive...?

Hi,

I'm still not too good been going to doctors to try and get to bottom of the issue however all test results appear to be okay at the moment. I keep trying to think positive however struggle sometimes as random rashes, constant stomach and loose stools, also keep getting body aches sometimes feels like my bones are throbbing. Staying away from having sex at moment as last four times we both ended up with thrush and before that it had never happened. I had moved on however recently what hasn't helped is my partner has started being tired alot like me and also more worrying she has been having trouble below with irregular periods and alike which is really concerning me... If I dont get somewhere soon I was thinking about going for another test as I can tell something is wrong but trying the doctor route first, keep thinking am I different and test not yet picking up as etc...

Re: Can you test Negative but still be positive...?

you have been diagnosed as hiv negative
right now making hiv any kind of concern
is a total waste of your time and resources
the best way to getting a proper diagnosis is by working closely
with an observant doctor
still not getting answers?
go find another doctor!
don't keep blaming somthing that
just isn't possible.
good luck

Re: Can you test Negative but still be positive...?

Dave a HIV test will just be negative.

Look you need to see your doctor and so does your wife if your not well. As for HIV it really is a none starter.
