Can HIV be transmitted through nose mucous membranes?

Hi All,
Can HIV be transmitted through nose mucous membranes?
My exposure was, accidental nose picking with unknown person's blood in my fingers? Only after the nose picking incident I realized that the person I had handshake was bleeding and I was exposed to his blood on my fingers(index finger).

If HIV transmission is possible in this manner, how much blood is needed?
Really worried and stressed out thinking about the incident.
Hope to get some answers from experts in this forum.
Thank you.

Re: Can HIV be transmitted through nose mucous membranes?

you cannot be infected by hiv
in the scenero you discribe

hiv will not penetrate thru your skin.

so you can touch all the infected fluids you want
and you will not be infected.

Re: Can HIV be transmitted through nose mucous membranes?

Hi Sir,

Thanks for the reply.
I read some articles on internet(I couldn't attach the link in thiis forum as it's being deleted) saying mucous membrane like eye and nose can be a passage for the virus to get in if there is a contact with contaminated blood. That's the thing making me worried.

Re: Can HIV be transmitted through nose mucous membranes?

If its worrying you then you have very little to worry about from this or life.
HIV is a fragile virus. It does not live outside the body, thus the time you got the blood on you, and you nose picking situation the virus would have been muted. Also their is not particular way the virus could get into your system. The final reason you really dont need to worry, is its very unlikley the person had HIV in the first place.
My advise, stop reading rubbish on the internet, understand the facts and stop being so paranoid.

Hope that help

Re: Can HIV be transmitted through nose mucous membranes?

There are no cases of anybody catching HIV through their nose that I'm aware of. In situations where this would be theoretically plausible (e.g. sharing cocaine snorting equipment) there have not been any confirmed infections and I do not believe your situation would even be considered theoretical plausible. If your situation was a risk it would have been identified by now and HIV would be much more prevalent and would not be classified as a sexually transmitted disease.

You need to have visible amount of FRESH infected blood to come in contact straight away with EYES or any other mucous membrane of your body to be on very little risk.

It cannot enter through skin.
It is not infectious outside the body as HIV starts to die as soon as it is out of its HOST.

Hope that helps!!

Re: Can HIV be transmitted through nose mucous membranes?

Hi Experts,

I have 2 scenarios.
First: Last week(exactly after two weeks from nose picking incident) I had some pain on tip of my tongue and front part of lips. Upon checking noticed some kind of white hairy thing on tip of the tongue. I got panicked and quickly visited local doctor. The doc said, I was having oral thrush. I'm still on medication(Daktarin Oral Gel, Fluconazole & Antibiotics) to treat this 'oral thrush'.
Second: 3 days ago, noticed 5 -6 red bumps/pimples on my left shoulder area and the bumps are still visible. No pain and no itch. I'm not having any sore throat and fever.
I'm in my 3rd week now after the nose picking incident.

Question : Are these two scenarios refers to ARS? I never had oral thrush and red bumps before this. The red bumps are 1mm-2mm diameter in size and they are 2 inches apart from each other. Is this HIV Rash?

Re: Can HIV be transmitted through nose mucous membranes?

the ars rash will cover most of your body...
you do not have hiv or ars
you were never exposed to hiv in the first place.
if it still bugs you out,
go get tested..
your results will be negative

No they doesnt sound like ARS at all! ARS rash is not centeralised but it is genralized and covers most of your body part including torso.
Buddy you are fine. You were never exposed to the virus on firs thand.
Stop looking on your body and move on.

Good Luck!!

Re: Can HIV be transmitted through nose mucous membranes?

Thank you all for the inputs. I need to focus more on other things and get rid of this HIV thoughts. Any idea how we can it? Internet causes a lot more anxiety to a lot of people like me. Where I can find reliable forums and info with regards to HIV(ie: Healthboards.com)?

Simple!! Just restrain yourself from Internet IF you cant stop googling HIV and Symptoms? Keep yourself busy in other things like going out, reading books, etc.

Hope that helps!!
