What to believe? Rapid Swab or Rapid Blood?

I went for a general testing yesterday. The rapid oral test came out positive to my shock. I was then taken from the clinic to the hospital for a more detailed blood test including the Weston Blot.

The rapid blood test came out neg. The lady at the hospital assured me it was a false positive which is relatively common in the oral test. I have also had very few sexual encounters and zero unprotected ones.

Still, I had to take the Weston blot test as req'd by state law if you test positive for any of the rapid test. That takes a week to come back. I am super anxious. I've read every case study including this bit which reports zero Weston Blot postives for situations where rapid oral test came pos and rapid blood came out neg:

"However, none of the 327 Western blot positive
persons identified in these studies had a reactive oral fluid
and non-reactive whole blood OraQuick test"

Despite reading this, I am still anxious and feel kind of untrusting of any test. If I can beat the odds and come neg after a pos oral, what are the chances I can come pos for Western blot?

Re: What to believe? Rapid Swab or Rapid Blood?

the rapid oral test is the most sensitive of the tests
and it is known to give out false positives.
they will always use the blood tests behind it to confirm
the inital result you got if it shows a positive result.
(i was not aware it was a law of any kind???)
so what you are going thru is known to happen quite a bit.

your second test is more important because it looks more
in depth at you and it can sort of tell the differance between hiv
and other virus's that you might have, that will
make the first test give a false result.
the first test is only a initial screening and not
the determing factor.
from what has happened so far with your tests
it is very likely you will
test out negative.

don't let the first test give you doubts,
it was made that way on purpose so if there was any question
it would show up as something so someone would not walk off
with hiv and they think that they don't have it.
you are not beating odds because you
have none to beat.
thats how it rolls alot of the time.

Re: What to believe? Rapid Swab or Rapid Blood?

Thanks! Yeah apparently in NYC there is a law that if you test pos in the initial screening, you've to get the in-depth test which takes a week to return. It's turning out to be the longest week. I should have argued against after the 2nd rapid test using blood came out neg.

I am just having nightmares about that moment when the guy walked in with his supervisor and said I have tested preliminary positive. And then the next half hr walking to hospital with the clinician and him saying the test is 99.6% accurate.

Now that I read online, swab test has been known for false pos and even stopped from being used.

May be I'll just forget about this and won't even go to pick up the final results.

Re: What to believe? Rapid Swab or Rapid Blood?

you will be fine
i doubt you will forget it..
it bugs you enough to ask
just go get the last results to confirm everything up for sure
and move on.
the oral test is almost never wrong when the result is negative
it is when it goes the other way, there could be the valid chance for error.
thats why the follow up.
it happens alot, so don't be upset about it.

Re: What to believe? Rapid Swab or Rapid Blood?

i forgot to ask you
what your exposure was?
because there are only certian ways you can get infected with hiv
and by looking at the risk you took is a good way to know
if the chance for you getting hiv even exists in
the first place.

Re: What to believe? Rapid Swab or Rapid Blood?

No exposure.
Two partners all life.
Both virgins at the time.
One confirmed negative yesterday.
Always protected.
< 5 instances of vaginal sex
Mostly just blowjobs, always protected

When the lady heard this, she just said "you're negative" before even doing the 2nd rapid blood test(which did come out negative). But the initial positive via swab test gives me jitters.

honestly,
go out and have a beer and don't even sweat it.
i can tell you that
you can EXPECT next test to be negative.
you did not give hiv a way to infect you in the first place.
sexually you will get it thru unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse
if you did not do either of those
you are safe!!

Re: What to believe? Rapid Swab or Rapid Blood?

Anecdotally, I know a guy who got a false positive on that oral swab test (this was years ago, maybe around 2003) and then was found negative on subsequent blood tests.
It can't be that uncommon.

best of luck. Based on your reported risk factors, the odds of you having hiv are nil.

Re: What to believe? Rapid Swab or Rapid Blood?

there are not many ways it can get at you,
a immaculate infection just does not happen.
the ways it can get you are very well known ,
it has been around for a while now
so they have it pretty much figured out.
that result you got would freak anyone out
who doesn't know how it works.
good luck

If you didnt have unprotected sex then you really have no risk of HIV. So the fact you had a negtaive result with blood should reassure your status. Oral tests are reknowned for false positives. Your western blot will be 100% conclusive and despite the worry and concern your going to have, please expect a negative
