Why do I read HIV can be hard to catch?

8 weeks ago I had my first MM encounter as a top and bottom, we both used condoms. While being the bottom for the first time the top male said that my bowel was full and stopped, he removed his condom with a tissue and cleaned up, I did as well then we continued with me as his top until climax.

Now as far as a can see everything was safe, but then my mind started ticking over, and I guess most people on here get the same feeling! Did the condom break? Was any virus passed on?

it has only been the last couple of weeks that I had started to think about it. I know my partner did not climax at the time. Once again like many I have been searching for some answers and hope. I did read that you do need a large amount of the HIV virus to be placed in the anus / vagina / blood stream for it even to be a chance of infecting, and then in most cases it doesn't! Even here I have read that it is hard to catch! Given my situation can anyone tell me what they feel about my chances.

It got the better of me on Monday and I went to a GP and the took some blood samples, now I sit and wait, the anxiety is killing me.

Blue - Brisbane.

Re: Why do I read HIV can be hard to catch?

Well if the condom would have broke it would look like a burst balloon and the ring of the penis would be around the base of your penis. As that was not the case you can be assured then you were fully protected, so well done for using condoms

As for a risk, zero. Protected sex is just that, so dont worry about the results, they are going to be fine

Hope that helps.

Re: Why do I read HIV can be hard to catch?

Apollo, I hoped that you would reply, had ben sitting up most of the night reading your replies. Both of us wore condoms, I know mine was intact when I removed it ( I climaxed ) my partner removed his with a tissue due to the bowel situation (hey I am new at this ) I just worried that something might have happened. Even god forbid there was an accident I just wondered what the chances were. He even did oral with a condom so I hope that indicated that he was serious about safe sex.

Re: Why do I read HIV can be hard to catch?

Hey no problem.

The fact you both used condoms for oral and more so he stopped when he know he should, would ceratinly indicate that safety is paramount for him and for yourself. On that basis, if anything would have concerned him ( which it did and he stopped ) im sure he would have told you buddy.

As its your first time im sure you have the first time " jitters" which is quite natural, but just be assured you were fine. If i thougt other wise i would tell you.

Re: Why do I read HIV can be hard to catch?

Thanks again Apollo, I guess we all come to these boards for reassurance that we have only a slim chance of picking up this virus, that we will test ok, and that our lives will move on.

Taking the courage to test was difficult, the wait is even harder. I dread a phone call from the Doctors office to say we need to see you urgently or something like that. I am not even sure how long it takes in Australia to get the tests back!

My question why can it be so hard yet so many people seem to have it? It is really that difficult? and does it require a large volume to fluid / blood to enter your system?

Interesting and nervous days ahead.

Oh, I still wish to explore my MM relationship, but will go armed with more knowledge the next time around.

Blue.

Re: Why do I read HIV can be hard to catch?

Well blood is the biggest concern and sperm the later. Now you dont need large volumes of liquid or sperm would not be a risk would it, but is more so the route of getting into your blood stream and the Viral load of the person.

In your case just be assured that you used protection and always use water based lube not oil. Just incase, their is a thread about PEP ( sticky at the top ) incase you may have a risk exposure.

Re: Why do I read HIV can be hard to catch?

Thanks again Apollo. I had only recently seen an article on The Body website and one of the Doctors actually write word this effect. I will share a secret that we HIV doctors don't like to share: HIV is hard to get. That does not mean throw caution and condoms to the wind. It is just a fact, it takes sufficient inoculum (amount of virus) to be placed into a receptive environment (inside the anus, vagina and bloody stream) to even have a chance that infection will occur and even under these circumstances it usually does not!
How does that sound?

Re: Why do I read HIV can be hard to catch?

I would certainly agree with that. Even if someone had HIV and you had sex, the odds are against you getting HIV. It does need a specific enviroment to survive and replicate. HIV is very fragile, hence if its exposed to air is dies very quickly. Also saliva will make the virus inactive, so yes its not that easy to catch at all. Infact their have been studies where couples where one person is positive, continue to have unprotected sex and the person continues to be negative.

That said, condoms are the only way to be assured in protection of HIV

Re: Why do I read HIV can be hard to catch?

Well I will try and stay positive in my emotional levels and negative in my HIV ones. I appreciate your assistance and will be sure to drop back here with my test results, fingers crossed but not the legs, there is too much enjoyment there.

Re: Why do I read HIV can be hard to catch?

Apollo I have just received in the mail my home testing kit, it came from NZ. I drew blood a week ago and I am yet to hear back on the results. I just don't know if I should try the home test on my own in case it was positive, but I am not sure how long I wait until my results are back from the doctors.

How long do you think the doctors tests would normally take?

Talk about anxiety !!

Re: Why do I read HIV can be hard to catch?

Hiya. They never rush HIV results, im sure its a global thing they do just to scare the hell out of us lol. Its does take a week to get the results, more so from the admin side. You could of course chase them up.

As for your home kit. As you used condoms you would not be at risk of HIV, so i wouldnt worry about it being positive unless you have had unprotected sex before.

Try not to worry, im sure all is well

Re: Why do I read HIV can be hard to catch?

Apollo,
It got the better of me! I debated long and hard wether I should do this test on my home, if indeed it were positive how wold I react, if eve states that on the testing kit. For some reasons these come out of NZ.

I say the kit in my mailbox this morning and my mouth went immediately dry, I had work to do all morning and was only able to get home a little over an hour ago. Bingo! Negative!!!

I have still yet to hear from the doctor but had other blood tests this morning for Cholesterol and prostrate.

The negative home kit (blood sample of a panel would be good yes?)

I think the negative confirms very much that you didnt have a risk and that your results from the doctors will be nothing more than confirmation of this

Re: Why do I read HIV can be hard to catch?

Thanks for you advise Apollo, when it was nerve racking to say the least doing the test at home. Just watching the bar darken then counting the lines, I can understand the warning they give regarding doing it on your own without a professional around. I hope these kits are accurate to say the least. I would have been at least 10 weeks since my incident. Is there a place that I can contact you direct, I tried to PM but it said they are disabled, would just love to know where your knowledge comes from.

Re: Why do I read HIV can be hard to catch?

The HIV test should be FDA approved, so yes its accurate buddy.

As for PM's i belive although im not 100%, that you need to make a certain amount of posts before you can PM or recive PM's from memebers

Re: Why do I read HIV can be hard to catch?

It might take me a little bit to get my head around it again, but will just enjoy the stress free weekend and let the anxiety melt away. The beer sounds like the go.

It's just a great feeling plus everything else was in great order too.
