Non-medical, but a ' what would you do' question...

First off, I have gotten some great advice re: my situation and testing, and plan on getting another test at week 4 and again at week 6 just to ease my mind in what was evidently a very low-risk situation. Thank you, Kevin, and others for being so kind and thorough with your responses and helping me see through this!

The 'what would you do' is this...............the other party involved in this situation............while I don't want to initiate contact given the circumstances in which this situation ended, I wonder if I should find a way to contact him and ask him to be tested so I can put an end to all of this. He could take a test and I would not have to wait out the next eight weeks, as I would know his status, which is the big unkonwn right now...........but of course if I do this, I risk starting communication again with him which I would NOT want to continue after finding out about the test results. I would even offer to pay for the test.

I know this is a medical community and these are the normal questions posted, but just thought I would throw this out there for thoughts and input. My anxiety level is beyond belief right now to the point where I am not doing well at all. Shouldn't be given the advice I've been given, but it is...........why? I don't know (((

I would love to hear any thoughts on this.

Re: Non-medical, but a ' what would you do' question......

Forgot to say...........part of the anxiety is from this sore throat that has been with me for two weeks that happened 21 days after the encounter. I've been tested for strep and everything else, and no cause has been found ((((

Re: Non-medical, but a ' what would you do' question......

Well take in mind you didnt have a risk as such and if i was in your shoes i wouldnt even test. That said if you need peace of mind then of course test. On that basis its your status that counts. Even if he took a test it will have no bearing to some extent. For eg, he may test positive which would freak you out, but it would not be a issue to you. If it didnt end well he could even say he is positive to spite you.

Either way, let sleeping dogs lie and test yourself if you still feel the need.

Re: Non-medical, but a ' what would you do' question...

Thank you, Apollo. I think I probably will NOT approach him. It might create bigger problems than just taking the test myself (which I do want to do) and waiting for the results. This week will be the four week mark, so I can take it tomorrow and know by the end of the week, and then only have one more week to go for six weeks (which in my mind, will be enough to satisfy me). Two more weeks of uncertainty probably is better than approaching him, convincing him to get the test, then dealing with whatever I have to deal with while communicating with him which wouldn't be good (lots and lots of issues non-HIV that would come up that I just want to leave behind). Had it been an ok relationship/situation, maybe it would be different.........but it truly would dig up a lot of 'stuff' that needs to be left alone. Thank you for your thoughts on this!

Re: Non-medical, but a ' what would you do' question...

Hey no problem. I have plenty of experience of scary ex's lol. If your going for a test try and get a rapid test, results within 15 minutes, saves you not having to worry for a few days

Re: Non-medical, but a ' what would you do' question...

LOL, about the crazies ) Seems like there are more out there than needs to be. Definitely the situation with this person.

So the rapid test - is it essentially the same test as the ELISA? Is it any less accurate than the ones you wait to get back in days? I'll have to call around and see who has it. Do the local health departments usually have the rapid tests or do you have to see a doctor? I would MUCH rather get it in 20 minutes than in days if the accuracy is the same. Thank you for taking the time to walk me through all of this!

Re: Non-medical, but a ' what would you do' question...

They are the same in terms of accuracy so dont worry about that. They test for antibodys like any HIV test. Im from the UK so im not sure what tests they use in your local HD, but ring around im sure they will tell you. Oraquick, Orasure, clearview and uni gold are all rapid tests that are used in the US, they are very common so you could as for one of those.
