Tested negative for hiv at 5 weeks

hi i tested at 5 weeks negative for hiv from the last time i had sex. it was a quick unprotected one night stand with a female whos status was unknown. i got tested at planned parenthood with an oral swab rapid hiv test.

i was just wondering if i should get tested again at 8 weeks or just wait 12 weeks?

This is a great indicator. You should be fine as it was a low-risk but check again at the 8 week mark and the 12 week mark. You status is EXTREMELY unlikely to change

I would just check at the 12 week/3month/90 day mark. The cahnces that the woman actually had HIV and that you contrcated it from a single exposure are extremely low. I would take your 5 week negative as fantastic news and expect the same at the official conclusive test...3 months.

Re: Tested negative for hiv at 5 weeks

You do not need to test at 8 weeks, its serves no purpose. Your 12 week test will be conclusive and final. 5 weeks is fair indication of status, so in the mean time, relax find other things to do to take your mind of this until you test again. Take in mind your risk was quite small in the scheme of things.

Re: Tested negative for hiv at 5 weeks

This is brilliant news of your HIV status! it is unlikely to change. I know I may not have as great knowledge as apollo and kev, but I have done extensive reading over the past 4 months of everything HIV related on GOV approved websites e.g CDC, Terrence Higgins etc along with talking to HIV professionals. I would say you'll be fine

You may as well wait for your 12 week test as thats the only one that counts,

Re: Tested negative for hiv at 5 weeks

Hi,

Buddy given your almost obsessive fear of HIV I doubt anything short of a 12 week test will convince you that you do not have HIV. Your test at 5 weeks was extremely accurate but even this as not had any effect or appears to have been of any benefit to you.

Given your posting history even if you did test tomorrow and received a negative result, which many leading experts would actually class as conclusive, given your extremely low risk, it is doubtful it will too be of any benefit to you. If you wish to test at ten weeks then by all means do so, before you do so look in the mirror and ask yourself these questions.

“Is this test going be of any benefit to me whatsoever and will I actually believe the result ? “ If the answer is no then there is no point in testing.

Then ask yourself “Regardless of what this result is will I still test at 12 weeks?” If the answer is yes, then again there is no point in you testing at ten weeks.

Kevin.

Re: Tested negative for hiv at 5 weeks

Thanks for that post kev it really hit home. I think your right about being obsessively scared and i have decided to wait until 12 weeks because what you said made a lot of sense.

i scheduled an appointment at planned parenthood for my 12 week test and the guy said 12 weeks (3 months) is 97% accurate and 6 months is 100% accurate. he also said he wasnt sure how accurate a 5 week test is. is this information true? 6 months seems too long to be !00% accurate

Re: Tested negative for hiv at 5 weeks

Hi,

Buddy most all HIV experts now agree that a six week negative test is as good as conclusive. Official guidelines and manufacturers guidelines all state that 12 weeks/ 3 months is conclusive for an HIV test. If you wish to test out to six months because somebody at planned parenting told you so by all means do so. It will be a further waste of three months of your life.

Almost all HIV infections are now detected before or at 6 weeks, your five week test, as you have been advised, is very unlikely to change regardless of when you test out to. Whether you accept a 12 week negative result as conclusive is entirely up to yourself. Medical science and HIV testing protocols accept it and you not accepting it will make zero difference to your HIV status.

Kevin.
