Hello everyone,

Thank you all for the time you dedicate to these forums and to the up to date, accurate information that you provide.
I hope I don't cause you all to roll your eyes with my question. I have looked at other posts and have found so e information but I figured I would just quit surfing the web and ask my question directly.
A few nights ago I was with a male of unknown status (I am female). I performed unprotected oral sex on him. He ejaculated in my mouth and I swallowed. There was a lot of deep throating as well.
I wanted to ask all of you experts what my possible exposure and risk for HIV might be. I called a hotline in New York and a counselor told me that I should test out to 6 months especially since I had semen in my mouth and because I swallowed.
So, was I at risk? How much of a difference does it make if there is semen present and it is swallowed? Should I get tested and if so should I wait 6 months?

You were not at risk, there has not been a single documented case of HIV being transmitted by oral sex in the 3 decades it has been around. It is a theoretical risk, and would take some pretty extradorinary circumstances, like open bleeding cuts in your mouth. Plus, he most likely did not have HIV anyways.

I would not even bother testing were I you....but by all means do if it will calm your nerves. A test at 6 weeks is extremely accurate, one at 3 months is 100% conclusive depsite what the hotline said. If you do decide to test, expect a negative result

I'm a bit curious about whether it does pose at least a little risk when there is semen in your mouth and/or when you swallow. I can see if semen does not come into contact with the mouth that there would be no risk but when it does, the mucus membrane of of the giver's mouth and stomach is exposed to infectious (assuming the virus is present) bodily fluids.

Also, what if a partner IS HIV positive? Is unprotected oral sex with ejaculation still safe to perform? I guess I'm just trying to understand and become educated on the matter.

If the seaman is swallowed into the stomach, it will not be a risk due to the stomach acids. HIV is a very fradgile virus and any changes in the enviroment will make the virus inactive.

The "potential" risk comes from, if you had a tooth removed then had a volume of sperm in your mouth where it may get into your blood stream via the open "bleeding" socket. Of course this is only therorectical and very unlikely to ever happen.
