BIG MISTAKE - help

My story starts like this, back in Nov I had unprotected sex with my boss (let me clarify i have been working for him for over 16yrs and we have always had an attraction to one another) but we never acted upon it till than. He had just recently split with his wife. We went out for a drink (which isnt unusual) and one thing led to another. After I asked if there was anything I should know about his health, and he stated he was ok. I suffer from anxiety and the fact that i know he is tends to get a little reckless when he drinks, I started to think the worse. In January i went in for my yearly physical and asked my Dr to give me an HIV test, this would be at the 8week mark. Everything came out negative, Dr told me my results were 99% accurate and move on, and so i did.

Now its approx 5mths after the act and i find an article stating that test are not conclusive until the 12wk/3mth mark. So now my anxiety is at a level 10!! I scheduled an appmnt right away to see my Dr. and get tested again. Once again my Dr tells me that my 8 week neg was 99% accurate. Let me add that I was not aware that my Dr is a specialist on STD's and is affiliated with NYU and has published a book on STD's/focus on HIV. He told me i was clear and that the only reason he was testing me again was to ease my anxiety.

Is he correct with saying my 8 week neg is 99% accurate, if so why is there so many conflicting information out there. Also, read a thread on here where a girl tested neg at 7.5 week, and than had a positive results at 13 weeks.

Also, my Dr will be on vacation for a week so i have to wait 2 weeks to get my results...PLEASE HELP, i really do not want to start taking my anxiety meds!

Re: BIG MISTAKE - help

Hiya. Well a test at 8 weeks is 99% conclusive and a test at 12 weeks is 99.89% conclusive. So you can see its not a lot of difference at all.

Now the cdc guidlines are that to be concidered HIV negative you require a test at 12 weeks but many experts very much agree that 8 weeks is conclusive and infact in Japan and France that is their time scale.

Well as for the case you read, well its possible of cause but then you have to take in mind that with older tests it may have happened but with modern tests its not likley at all. Only a very few will test positive after 8 weeks, infact i have never known such a thing but thats not to say i cannot happen but with modern tests these days its just not viable. You have more chance of winning the lottery with the numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6.

As for you, well its very unlikley he has HIV, less than 1% and for you to test positive after this time scale, .89% so doing the maths on that, you can see for yourself. I honestly think your over reacting to this situation. By all means take another test for peace of mind but i dont belive yout test will change. Take in mind you can take a HIV test anywhere, not just your Doctors if you really need an answer for your anxiety.

Re: BIG MISTAKE - help

Thx for the reply, I might go and take a rapid test. I'm still worried about the possibility that my results may change.

Re: BIG MISTAKE - help

Another question, I didn't go and get the other test, figured I would wait for my dr for my results, don't want to over test and maybe jinx it. My question is, after my 8 week neg test, should I retested again after 2mths have gone by? Am I putting myself at risk of maybe false positive? Due to my anxiety I have learned to put out good energy out and with my anxiety kinda out of whack I don't want that bad energy affect my results.

Re: BIG MISTAKE - help

any test taken after 12 weeks is conclusive, so it will not create a problem when you test, if thats what your asking?

Re: BIG MISTAKE - help

Freaking out a bit here, my Dr basically told me my 8 week neg result is 99% accurate as you have stated as well and that my test result would not change. I went on the other boards for HIV and read their were individuals that didnt test positive after a few years after exposure, after receiving neg results prior to there positive.

Re: BIG MISTAKE - help

With modern tests no one tests positive after years at all. 3 months is fine, only if your a long term drug user, or on chemo with you test out to 6 months but that is so rare know days.

Stop googling rubbish and listem to your doctor as the facts speak for themselves.

Re: BIG MISTAKE - help

Yup, modern tests are just so accurate now days, infact in medical terms they are one of the most accurate tests around, far more accurate than a test for cancer. So if you got the all clear for cancer would you then keep testing for years later of course you would not. This is just your anxeity feeding your thoughts.

Re: BIG MISTAKE - help

I know what you mean about anxiety, I do not want to get into what I'm feeling right now. But because I have suffered from anxiety for a while now, I'm trying not to attribute it to HIV.
