Is testosterone therapy safe? Natural way to increase levels?

My husband is 56 and just had a physical. Bloodwork showed his testosterone level is 278. The doctor wants him to take therapy in the way of injections, gels or patches. I just wonder if this is safe? Could it increase risk for testicular or prostate cancer? Doctor says probably not but would want him to have psa checked in 90 days if he does the therapy. Doctor says it would be good for his heart health and bone density as well as sex drive. I was wondering if there was any natural ways to increase the levels?
