Constant clearing of throat could be a side affect of some medication. My girlfriend takes something for her illness and it causes her to clear her throat. Another one that she takes has a side affect of making her cough

With my wife, throat clearing came with the advanced stages of dementia. Prior to the loss of swallowing. But hope that's not what this is.

Sometimes it seems as though it is a habit but I did start wondering after reading something on here somewhere that it could be a precurser to the inability to swallow stage.
Time will tell I suppose.

Diane, I will check with her doctor to see if that is a side effect of anything she is on.
