UK is pretty much the same, although how these figures are known, I'm not sure. No-one is tested for HPV in the UK.

We simply have our pap (smear tests) and the follow up treatment but are never tested for HPV as there is no treatment anyway.

Re: hpv around the world

I'm sure it's everywhere.

Also, I've read that the figure is closer to 100% in people who've had more than three partners, which is pretty much most people. HPV is really nothing to freak about; it's pretty innocuous :-)

I think the 80% figure came from a University of Washington study. The other figure I quoted came from an infectious disease specialist, who is a professor, author (papers/journal articles/textbooks), former director of a STD prevention program, and currently a visiting scientist at the CDC.

Not that I want people TO freak out over it, but calling it innocuous isn't doing it justice either. Not when you consider that certain strains of the virus are what cause cervical cancer. People (especially women) just have to be aware.

As for Canada's stats, the Health Canada gov't web site says 75% of Canadians have or have had it. Obviously much higher if you only factor in sexually active adults. Just remember, HPV includes ALL strains of warts, not just the 'genital' variety.

I completely agree with this. I am awaiting another pap after having an abnormal result last time. I have had genital warts so obviously know that I have HPV.

It is only easy to call it innocuous when it has not yet affected your health in any way.

I don't know. Admittedly I have never had any effects of HPV (although I'm quite positive I have it), but I think it's like anything else. I don't freak about the flu, and I consider it pretty innocuous, but people can and do *die* from it every year. I still say HPV isn't a big deal, but it's important to get annual pap smears (or whatever), so that if you do have any changes, you can take care of them promptly and keep healthy :-)

Yes, HPV stands for Human Papilloma Virus, and does include all wart (papilloma) viruses, not just the genital kind.

BUT, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) here in the US says that 80% of sexually active adult Americans have GENITAL HPV. I don't know about in Canada, but here in the US, the 80% number does refer to genital HPV. If you were to consider all strains of warts, I would have to assume that the number would be 100%. I don't think there is anyone who hasn't been exposed to at least one type of wart virus.

Just wanted to clarify.

Re: hpv around the world

I think one important thing to remeber about this virus is that ignorance is bliss. Most ppl do not even know about it and yet are effected by it...if I had never gotten any warts I could just easily assume that I was one of the 20% that didnt have an std..I think what really should be done is to remove the label as an STD because it does not require intercourse for it to pass...and also to get the social stigma detached from it and give it a more sympathetic value since it is so rampant and easily spread.

BTW Pap smears do check for cervical cell changes which indicates if you have the strain of HPV, which can cause cervical cancer (although some changes like yeast infections can cause an abnormal pap). And there is treatment, just not a cure. Just had to add that .
