My boyfriend and I both contracted HPV about two months after we started dating (me first, then his flared up). We have have been getting treatment for the past 8 months. Mine totally cleared up three months ago, his is a little more stubborn and he is still dealing with it. I was told by my doctor no sex until we are both GW free, even with a condom because he said condoms are not that effective because they can't cover the very top of the penis, it can slip down a little during sex, skin cells shedding, etc., and we would just be passing it back and forth. His doctor, as well as a dermatologist said the same thing pretty much. So we have not had sex for 8 months, and probably have a couple more months to go before he is cleared up. My question to couples who are going through the same thing---do you have sex, even protected, and have you been told this about condoms? We aren't taking any chances, and so we have and will continue to abstain until he is all better, but I was just curious about others in this situation.
We also were both told that even though we have had protected sex with previous partners before we met that it didn't matter, you could still contract it anyway, that condoms were not effective for prevention of HPV.
