HPV and HSV

Hi, I need a bit of clarity on something -

I was diagnosed with herpes on my genitals although it was HSV1 which I was informed normally occurs in the mouth area. I was given treatment and thought nothing more about it until one day my friends were talking about HSV leading to Cervical Cancer and HIV!!!!!!

I thought that it was HPV that leads to Cervical Cancer/HIV but my friends are quite paranoid about health issues so are probably more knowledgable about these things. I give them quite a hard time about being so paranoid so I didn't want to ask them more about it, mainly because I don't want drawn in by them. I am normally quite a rational person but I am panicing a bit about this and feel too silly to ask anyone I know.

Please help.

Re: HPV and HSV

Well, from what I have read HPV infection is the main cause of cervical cancer. This does not mean one with HPV will develop cancer.Other factors increase the risk of cancer..smoking,number of live births, long term contraception use,STD's ..like HSV-2.

One is more at risk for HIV if they have HSV-2 then someone who does not have HSV-2.

Re: HPV and HSV

Cervical cancer is caused by the virus HPV not...I repeat...not by HSV.

To clarify the hightened risk of HIV if you have HSV is because if you have HSV you can have open sores which give HIV a way to enter your body...that's the only reason...neither HSV nor HPV lead to HIV...period!

And genital herpes can be either hsv 1 or 2 or both.

Re: HPV and HSV

thanks keeps I was misinformed.HSV 2 has nothing at all to do with cancer.I am so glad to have this board with knowledgable people.

I am so sorry wonders......but the rest of my post is is true.

I want to add as far as HPV as long as you go for your yearly exams things will be fine it can be caught and treated if it was to happen.

Re: HPV and HSV

Ahhhh, I see. Thanks guys.

I'm so glad I found this website because some things are embarrassing to ask an actual person - especially when you come off sounding quite ignorant!!!

Thanks again.
