HPV Question, Kinda worried about it. =/ - Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Message Board

Hey, I had sex with this girl about 2 months ago. We had sex once and I didn't use a condom (Stupid, I know...) A few weeks ago she found out that her ex BF has HPV and so she got tested and found out that she had it. She didn't know she had it earlier because it didn't show up on her pap. She, I guess, had to have a special test for it. She has had no symptoms of it at all as far as I know. I know that I can't get tested so I really don't know what to do at this point.

Is there any way to find out if I have it? I've heard there are no tests.

What are the chances that I have it?

If I have it, will it go away? (I've read that the body can cure itself of weaker strands of it in about 8 months.)

What should I do? Should I take a sex break for a year and hope it's gone by then?

Am I required to tell future partners for the rest of my life that I once had sex with a girl that had HPV but I really don't know if I have it or not?

Can I assume at all that I don't have it?

I hope this is an OK place to post this and that my questions were clear. I really don't know a lot about HPV and there are a lot of conflicting views on it such as whether or not you can get rid of it. Most of the other HPV threads were regarding women.

I think you can assume that you probably have it, because you were exposed to it. HPV is so incredibly common that pretty much anyone who has sex with more than one partner is going to get some strain of it at one point or another.

As to what you should do... can't really advise you on that one. What kind of HPV did the ex-bf have? If he actually had the visible genital warts, then I would suggest you wait to see if you get any. After a suitable length of time and none show up, you can assume you're safe. If he had the 'invisible' kind (only show up as cervical changes on women) then you'll never know.

Out of respect for your future partners (for the next 2 years anyway) you should probably tell them that you were exposed to it, but don't know if you actually have it (but again, you should assume you do).
